Pacifiers may have emotional consequences for boys

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? Pacifiers may stunt the emotional development of baby boys by robbing them of the opportunity to try on facial expressions during infancy.

Three experiments by a team of researchers led by psychologists from the University of Wisconsin-Madison tie heavy pacifier use as a young child to poor results on various measures of emotional maturity.

The study, published September 18 by the journal Basic and Applied Social Psychology, is the first to associate pacifiers with psychological consequences. The World Health Organization and American Academy of Pediatrics already call for limiting pacifier use to promote breast-feeding and because of connections to ear infections or dental abnormalities.

Humans of all ages often mimic -- unwittingly or otherwise -- the expressions and body language of the people around them.

"By reflecting what another person is doing, you create some part of the feeling yourself," says Paula Niedenthal, UW-Madison psychology professor and lead author of the study. "That's one of the ways we understand what someone is feeling -- especially if they seem angry, but they're saying they're not; or they're smiling, but the context isn't right for happiness."

Mimicry can be an important learning tool for babies.

"We can talk to infants, but at least initially they aren't going to understand what the words mean," Niedenthal says. "So the way we communicate with infants at first is by using the tone of our voice and our facial expressions."

With a pacifier in their mouth, a baby is less able to mirror those expressions and the emotions they represent.

The effect is similar to that seen in studies of patients receiving injections of Botox to paralyze facial muscles and reduce wrinkles. Botox users experience a narrower range of emotions and often have trouble identifying the emotions behind expressions on other faces.

"That work got us thinking about critical periods of emotional development, like infancy," says Niedenthal, whose work is supported by the French Agence Nationale de la Recherche. "What if you always had something in your mouth that prevented you from mimicking and resonating with the facial expression of somebody?"

The researchers found six- and seven-year-old boys who spent more time with pacifiers in their mouths as young children were less likely to mimic the emotional expressions of faces peering out from a video.

College-aged men who reported (by their own recollections or their parents') more pacifier use as kids scored lower than their peers on common tests of perspective-taking, a component of empathy.

A group of college students took a standard test of emotional intelligence measuring the way they make decisions based on assessing the moods of other people. Among the men in the group, heavier pacifier use went hand-in-hand with lower scores.

"What's impressive about this is the incredible consistency across those three studies in the pattern of data," Niedenthal says. "There's no effect of pacifier use on these outcomes for girls, and there's a detriment for boys with length of pacifier use even outside of any anxiety or attachment issues that may affect emotional development."

Girls develop earlier in many ways, according to Niedenthal, and it is possible that they make sufficient progress in emotional development before or despite pacifier use. It may be that boys are simply more vulnerable than girls, and disrupting their use of facial mimicry is just more detrimental for them.

"It could be that parents are inadvertently compensating for girls using the pacifier, because they want their girls to be emotionally sophisticated. Because that's a girly thing," Niedenthal says. "Since girls are not expected to be unemotional, they're stimulated in other ways. But because boys are desired to be unemotional, when you plug them up with a pacifier, you don't do anything to compensate and help them learn about emotions."

Suggesting such a simple and common act has lasting and serious consequences is far from popular.

"Parents hate to have this discussion," Niedenthal says. "They take the results very personally. Now, these are suggestive results, and they should be taken seriously. But more work needs to be done."

Sussing out just why girls seem to be immune (or how they may compensate) is an important next step, as is an investigation of what Niedenthal calls "dose response."

"Probably not all pacifier use is bad at all times, so how much is bad and when?" she asks. "We already know from this work that nighttime pacifier use doesn't make a difference, presumably because that isn't a time when babies are observing and mimicking our facial expressions anyway. It's not learning time."

But even with more research planned to further explain the new results, Niedenthal is comfortable telling parents to consider occasionally pocketing the pacifier.

"I'd just be aware of inhibiting any of the body's emotional representational systems," Niedenthal says. "Since a baby is not yet verbal -- and so much is regulated by facial expression -- at least you want parents to be aware of that using something like a pacifier limits their baby's ability to understand and explore emotions. And boys appear to suffer from that limitation."

Iran nuke chief harshly criticizes atomic agency

VIENNA (AP) ? Iran's nuclear chief said Monday that "terrorists and saboteurs" might have infiltrated the International Atomic Energy Agency in an effort to derail his nation's atomic program, in an unprecedentedly harsh attack on the integrity of the U.N. organization and its probe of allegations that Tehran is striving to make nuclear arms.

Fereydoun Abbasi also rebuked the United States in comments to the IAEA's 155-nation general conference, reflecting Iran's determination to continue defying international pressure aimed at curbing its nuclear program and nudging it toward cooperation with the IAEA inspection.

Revealing what he said were two sabotage attempts on his country's nuclear program, he challenged the perpetrators to launch new attacks, saying his country is determined to learn how to protect its interests through such assaults.

The defiant speech was bound to give a greater voice to hardline Israeli leaders who say that both diplomatic efforts and economic penalties have had no effect on Iran, leaving military strikes as the only alternative to stopping it from developing nuclear weapons.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, a proponent of such an option, made a direct appeal to American voters on Sunday to elect a president willing to draw a "red line" with Iran.

In the past week, Netanyahu has urged President Barack Obama and other world leaders to state clearly at what point Iran would face a military attack. But Obama and his top aides, who repeatedly say all options remain on the table, have pointed to shared U.S.-Israeli intelligence that suggests Iran hasn't decided yet whether to build a bomb, despite pursuing the technology, and that there would be time for action beyond toughened sanctions already in place.

In Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel described Iran as "a threat, not only for Israel but for the whole world." But she said she wants to see a "political solution" and that the international community should work together to try and find one, including the possibility of new sanctions. "The room for political maneuver is not yet exhausted," she told reporters on Monday.

Iran has often warned that any Israeli attack would trigger a devastating response, and on Monday Abbasi suggested that such strikes would not succeed in slowing down his country's nuclear program. He said without elaboration that experts have "devised certain ways through which nuclear facilities remain intact under missile attacks and raids."

Tehran denies seeking nuclear arms, and Abbasi ? an Iranian vice president whom the agency suspects may have been involved in nuclear weapons research ? insisted on Monday that his country's nuclear program is aimed only at making reactor fuel and doing medical research.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran ... has always opposed and will always denounce the manufacture and use of weapons of mass destruction," he said.

Tehran has long dismissed suspicions that it may re-engineer its uranium enrichment program from making reactor fuel to produce nuclear warheads and says accusations that it has worked secretly on nuclear arms are based on fabricated U.S. and Israeli intelligence. It also frequently accuses the IAEA of anti-Iran bias in its push to ensure that all of Tehran's nuclear activities are peaceful.

But Abbasi's comments Monday were the harshest on the agency itself.

"Terrorists and saboteurs might have intruded the agency and might be making decisions covertly," he said. Citing what he said was an example of sabotage on Aug. 17 at an underground enrichment plant, he said IAEA inspectors arrived to inspect it shortly after power lines were blown up.

"Does this visit have any connection to that detonation?" he asked.

It appeared to be the first mention of the alleged sabotage attack. The plant at Fordo, about 70 kilometers (40 miles) south of Tehran, is of particular concern to Israel because it is buried deep in a mountainside to protect it from assault. It also is being used to enrich uranium closer to the level needed for a nuclear warhead than what is used to power most industrial reactors, although Iran says it needs the higher level both because its present research reactor runs on the higher-grade material and because it plans to build more such reactors.

Asked by reporters to expand on the alleged sabotage attempt, Abbasi said it was foiled "by using backup batteries and diesel generators" that prevented any disruption to centrifuges used to spin uranium to enriched levels.

He also said a separate attack on the country's centrifuges ? through tiny explosions meant to disable key parts of the machines ? was discovered before the timed blasts could go off. Abbasi did not elaborate on the date or other details of that alleged assault attempt.

Tehran has acknowledged that the Stuxnet computer worm affected a limited number of centrifuges at its main uranium enrichment facility in the central city of Natanz two years ago. As well, assassins killed three scientists with links to Iran's nuclear programs in 2010 and 2011.

Dozens of unexplained explosions have hit the country's gas pipelines, and Iran's first nuclear power plant suffered major equipment failures delaying its operations for decades before going on line this year ? delays that some experts attribute to acts of sabotage.

But Tehran says it has improved its defenses since the Stuxnet attack ? a point made again on Monday by Abbasi who challenged would-be saboteurs. "We are a powerful country. We can confront any kind of industrial espionage whether it is an explosive or a virus," he told reporters. "We are eager and interested to ask the other side to have more (attacks) because having more we would be more experienced."

Inside the IAEA meeting, he said Iran now can "ward off threats by targeting ... cyber-attacks, industrial sabotage and use of explosives," without elaborating.

Beyond suggesting that the IAEA had been infiltrated, Abbasi said that anti-Iran elements are helped by the agency, even when it reports what it sees "truthfully and with absolute honesty," because "this information is easily accessible to saboteurs and terrorists through IAEA reports."

He also said U.S. pressure on Iran is the equivalent of an attack on all developing nations' nuclear rights. He called U.S.-led sanctions on Iran's oil exports and financial transactions "the ugly face of colonization and modern slavery."

"A state which has used nuclear weapons is not eligible to be present at the Board of Governors," he said, questioning the right of the United States to sit on the 35-nation IAEA board that makes agency policy.

Statements critical of Iran on Monday were voiced in more traditional terms similar to that heard at previous IAEA meetings.

U.S. Energy Secretary Stephen Chu accused Tehran of continuing "a decade-long pattern of evasion regarding questions over the nature of its nuclear program, including those related to possible military dimensions of its nuclear activities."

A European Union statement warned of "deep concerns about possible military dimensions" to Iran's nuclear program.

Turkey: 8 police killed in landmine blast

ISTANBUL (AP) ? Suspected Kurdish rebels detonated a landmine along a highway in eastern Turkey on Sunday, killing eight police officers and wounding nine, Turkish media reported.

The attack occurred in Bingol province, where the rebel Kurdistan Workers' Party, also known as the PKK, is active. Video posted on the Dogan News Agency website showed the mangled remains of a white minibus with blown-out windows that had been carrying the police. The vehicle lay at a bend in a road, and ambulances and armored vehicles had gathered in the area as part of the rescue mission.

The attack comes amid a surge in fighting between Turkish security forces and Kurdish rebels who seek self-rule in southeastern Turkey. On Saturday, a similar attack on a military convoy killed four soldiers and wounded five in Hakkari province in the southeast, according to the provincial governor's office.

Officials in Hakkari said a total of 123 "terrorists," a reference to Kurdish rebels, had been killed in military operations in the past 10 days. Hakkari borders Iraq, where Kurdish militants have bases from which they launch hit-and-run attacks on Turkish targets.

While Turkey and its Western allies consider the PKK to be a terrorist group, Turkish authorities have sought to address the grievances of many in its Kurdish minority by granting more cultural rights and initiating economic programs in predominantly Kurdish areas. However, Kurdish activists say the measures do not go far enough, and recent fighting has overshadowed such peace initiatives.

Whiplash Myths You Should Know - Dr Davis' Back & Wrist Pain Blog

Whiplash doctors san franciscoWe have been providing treatment for whiplash in San Francisco for over 20 years now.

Whiplash is most commonly associated with the rapid, uncontrolled movement of the head as it whips back and forth during a motor vehicle collision. Though different types of injuries are associated with rear vs. front vs. side collisions, the net result is similar: the neck hurts! This month, we will look at several ?myths? or untruths associated with the cause of whiplash or WAD, whiplash associated disorders.

MYTH #1: MEN ARE MORE VULNERABLE TO INJURY BECAUSE OF THEIR GREATER NECK MUSCLE MASS: FACT: This is exactly the opposite! Women are more vulnerable because they have LESS muscle mass, and hence, less tissue stopping the neck from going through a greater range of motion during the ?crack the whip? process. Woman with long, slender necks are especially more vulnerable. They also take longer to recover and are more likely to suffer permanent residual problems long after their case settles.

?MYTH #2: YOU CAN?T HAVE A CONCUSSION UNLESS YOU HIT YOUR HEAD: This seems logical as most concussions occur from direct head trauma. However, during the whiplash process the brain, which is suspended by ligament-like structures inside the skull, bathed in a liquid, can literally smash into the inside wall of the skull resulting in concussion just from the whipping action, without hitting anything. Permanent residuals such as memory problems, articulating thoughts, staying on task, and more can result. This is often called ?post-concussive syndrome? or ?mild traumatic brain injury.?

?MYTH #3: NEGATIVE X-RAYS MEANS NO INJURY: Often, in the ER after a motor vehicle collision, x-rays are taken and read by the radiologist as ??essentially normal.? This can be confused as meaning, ??then there was no injury.? X-rays only show the bones in the neck and head region, not the muscles, tendons, ligaments or nerves. MRI (magnetic resonant imaging) shows more of these ?soft tissues,? not just bone. But, due to the high costs of MRI, x-rays are performed first, and only later, if symptoms warrant it, is an MRI ordered. Soft tissue injury to the ligaments (the tissues that strongly hold bone to bone) can be assessed when we take flexion / extension (or bending forwards & backwards) x-rays, but many times these are not ordered in the ER.

MYTH #4: REST AND TIME ALONE WILL HEAL WHIPLASH: Though time for healing plays a role in recovery following all injuries, many patients find this approach fails and their pain persists. In fact, studies suggest that mobilization and manipulation performed as soon as possible after a whiplash injury yields significantly better outcomes than wearing a cervical collar and not moving the neck. Whiplash injuries, when not properly treated, often results in permanent loss of motion, pain, headache, and more. The days of rest and time only should be replaced by the sports medicine model of hot/cold packs, modalities such as interferential, pulsed magnetic stimulation, light or laser therapy, manipulation, massage, traction and guided exercise. Not, ??wait and watch.?

???????????? Tune in next month for addition myths about whiplash as there are MANY! Rest assured that prompt chiropractic care is the best approach for treatment of the whiplash injured patient.

Facebook Engagement: Love Found in an Instant! | Brown Condor

Love found in one moment; in an instant I went from being single to being married.

by Teddy Fikre? anniversary: Sunday, September 16th, 2012

I have changed my mind about Facebook.? For years I have waged a war against the social network convinced that Facebook and Twitter were robbing us of real life while concurrently using these platforms to connect to my own people.? The irony did not get lost on me that Facebook connected me to my own people in ways that I never thought possible.? Yet it gnawed on me incessantly, I felt that we were getting consumed in modernity and that our culture?steeped in one on one conversation and gradual yet abiding friendships?was getting lost in the shuffle of pokes and tweets.?

And then it suddenly happened.? Love found in one moment; in an instant I went from being single to being married.? Years of confusion gave way to clarity and all it took was for me to look at my destiny?s face by means of profile picture and I knew she was the one.? Love in an instant! Who needs the hassles of courtships and dates, who needs to go through the nuisance of finding love by working hard for it.? Instead sign up to Facebook, scroll through and add 400 women as your friend, play the game of numbers, copy and paste the same corny pickup lines to these aforementioned 400 women, then BAM! Love found mathematically, matters of the heart become data points that can be quantified and enumerated on an abacus.?

Thus the magic moment happened; I ask the new love of my life in the most romantic way the words which I am sure made her swoon! I mean I could have bought her a ring, then go through an intricate process that respects our culture like sending men in my family to ask my new love?s father for her hand in marriage. I could have planned a surprise where the most romantic details were meticulously set up so that she could talk about her marriage proposal for a lifetime with pride in her heart.? But who has time for all that in the age of Facebook.? Instead I just stayed on my couch and asked my future wife through chat these most magical words:

?Yene konjo, will you be my nicca for life?

There, with these words my future wife and I got engaged, changed our Facebook relationship status to display that we were about to be married, and in a whirlwind we got married today at approximately 12:45 PM EST.? Never mind that my new wife lives on the West Coast and I live on the East Coast. Never mind that I have yet to meet her in person nor that Gelila and I have yet to kiss.? We just tied the knot and we don?t even know each other?s favorite food.? Love in a microwave, many search for fiker, Gelila and I found it on Facebook.

If you have not figured it out by now, Gelila and I are not married.? Gelila is one of my close friends on Facebook and she and I were joking around yesterday when all the sudden I had an idea to turn our little joke into a social commentary.? Gelila in reality is an amazing woman who is currently in graduate school determined to make her life meaningful by helping other people.? Gelila is everything that a man can want in a woman because she is not a woman waiting on the sidelines for a man to save her.? Gelila is a woman in its purest meaning because she is a woman set out to make her own destiny instead of depending on another to give her desta and happiness.? The only time that people can truly find love and love another is when individuals can find the space and the time to love themselves and do for self before they can do for others.?

Hold tight though, here comes the social commentary.? You see, too many of us are not like Gelila.? Too many think that we can find love in an instant to save us from our own misery.? Thus we too often end up in codependent relationships and in due time love turns into enmity.? Love in the process becomes an end instead of a means to finding happiness?only after finding love do many find that the love they found is a dead end. Love has lost its meaning, love has gone from wot that simmers to a boil into a Ramen instant noodle.? Who has time to find true love when too many are in a rush to find lust while lusting for someone they can call their own.

Facebook in this sense has destroyed the meaning of relationships.? It?s like people are in a rush to find a significant other so they can change their Facebook relationship status so they can brag to the world ?look at me? and in the process demean themselves.? Love is not a status you share to the world, love is instead a feeling you share in your heart with the one you love.? But who has time for that in the age of Twitter, we have friends to impress and we have to keep up with the Yohanneses! Thus we go to clubs and lounges looking for that cutie that we can call our own so that we can take a pic with our iPhones and upload the ?cute couple pic? on Facebook and share our Facebook profile space with someone we barely know.?

Thus I am not disarming nor am I stopping my war on Facebook fantasy painters, hell I am about to rename Facebook to Fa?adebook because too many people are on Facebook to live a life of lies instead of using Facebook to start a social awakening.? Children in Ethiopia are dying because they have no hope, we in America can use Facebook to revolutionize Ethiopia and rebrand our country from a beggar nation into a better nation?instead too many use Facebook to post picture after picture of themselves and brag about what type of yogurt they are eating.? I know, I just turned a fun little article into a deep message.? Now you see that most of my jokes and satires that I post on Facebook and write about on this website have a deeper meaning if you take the time to read what I write fully instead of turning to the ways of Habesha and insulting before understanding (I am not Habesha, I am Ethiopian).

So it?s back to single life for Teddisho and Gelila, who knows maybe one of these days we might get married in real life.? But if we do, you better believe that we will not be announcing it on Facebook nor will you see me changing my Facebook relationship status for the sake of getting attention.? Moreover, my birthday is October 27th, so when you see another date popping up as my birthdays just remember that I change my birthday on Facebook periodically to poke fun of people who wish me a happy birthday without knowing when my real birthday is.? As much as I stay on Facebook to promote Ethiopia in my heart I am an old soul who loves our old fashion customs as I try to convince you the reader to change some of your ways to accept life in the 21st century.? I want us to remain loyal to the things that are beautiful about our culture but change up those things which prevents us from finding collective success.?

If you take away nothing else from this article, please remember always that love does not come easy and neither can you find love on Facebook.? Don?t fall victim to the picture that people paint of themselves on Facebook because most of the time people only show the best part of themselves on social networks and will never reveal to you their inner struggles.? Thus a lady who is dressed up like a queen can have the heart of a tyrant and a man who is dressed up in a suit can be worthless and be an empty suit like Mitt Romney.? Take the time to find love by doing it the old fashion way. Get to know someone off Facebook and befriend that man or woman you have feelings for and see where density takes you in reality instead of living love virtually.? One days they might invent instant injera, but trust me they will never be able to invent Instant Love.
