Is it Social Media's fault that 'It's Complicated'? ? Culture and Social ...

The article??from the Huffington Post ?discusses ?the green-eyed (or in this case, blue and white logo?ed) monster known as Facebook?jealousy?. Bindley at the beginning of her?article asserts:???Facebook itself isn?t to blame for the demise of domestic bliss. Instead, it?s an avenue by which threats can develop if you fail to communicate about them,?? and one that can exacerbate problems that already exist?.? She then goes on to outline four relationship Facebook scenarios that?most often?cause?strife: Over-?(or Under-)sharing, Tagged Photos Of You With Your Ex, You Just Got A Friend Request From An Ex, Someone You?re Already Friends With Gets Friendlier, You See Something Worrisome On Your Significant Other?s Page and Facebook Secrets.

?

The experts Bindley discusses these issues with propose various solutions from ?deny, deny, deny?, having a face to face conversation with your partner about it or hiding something of your own. The solutions seem to me to be unhelpful to the problems.

?

It appears to me?that this article is influenced by the professionals and experts that the author brings in to the discussion. Bindley herself asserts at the beginning that Facebook does not cause problems but rather exacerbates them. This notion is contradicted in the article?by Jennine Estes, a couples? therapist who says she hears about Facebook issues on a daily basis in her office with issues such as one party reconnecting with an ex to one not mentioning the relationship on Facebook at all.? Estes says, ?these problems aren?t limited to relationships with pre-existing problems. Facebook presents so many challenges to committed relationships?.

I would argue that Facebook cannot present challenges to a relationship that is not already struggling with the same or other issues off?the internet. Bindley says, ?Messaging someone you hooked up with before you met your current love interest, analyzing a wall post on your significant other?s page, stewing over a suspicious picture but not actually asking about it ? all of these have been known to tank relationships?. These things alone do not ?tank relationships?.

The discourse in this article and generally?surrounding social media and their effect on relationships seems to be one of blame. Many articles I came across?have negatively connotated titles, alluding to the fact that social mediums are ?killing? relationships and ?making you? jealous. This sort of discourse around social media suggests that people are jealous and relationships end because of social networks such as Facebook. However, I think it is all to easy to use social networks as scape goats when the reality people have always been jealous and always will be, regardless of the platform or facilitation.

danah?boyd speaks to this notion in her article Friends, Friendsters and MySpace Top 8. boyd?says, ?Part of what makes the negotiation of Friendship on social network sites tricky is that it is deeply connected to participant?s offline social life?Social network sites are not digital spaces disconnected from other social venues-?it is a modeling of one aspect of participant?s social worlds?. In other words, to understand and interact with social network sites it is vital to keep in mind that these sites are deeply intertwined with our physical lives and the relationships there in. Social network connections are not separate entities in themselves. It is this idea that Bindley?s article seems to disregard. The problems identified in the article are not?because of Facebook nor are they limited to the social media realm; they real life roots and implications.

Judith Donath?and boyd?discuss these notions?as well in their article Public displays of?Connection.?They say, ?In the physical world, people display their connection in many ways. They have parties?they drop names?they decorate their refrigerator with photos? These displays serve various purposes?Seeing someone within the context of the connections provides the viewer with information about them?. The authors then go on to discuss the inferences drawn and reliability of these displays. This description of the physical world is no different in the social network world. This is even further evidence that actions or lack there of social media are simply displacements of something that would probably have and may still happen else where in a physical context without social media. If it wasn?t someone writing on a boyfriend?s wall that would ignite jealousy it would be seeing that person text him, approach him at a party, etc.

One thing to take away from my original article?is their last piece of ?advice??

?Our experts agree that the golden rule of Facebooking while committed is that on FB, as in life, you shouldn?t be doing anything that you wouldn?t want your partner to see.?

theflyonthewall.com: Earnings Preview: Cisco could offer better-than-expected Q2 and outlook
Cisco Systems (CSCO) is expected to report Q2 earnings after the market close on Wednesday, February 8, with a conference call scheduled for 4:30 pm ET. The consensus estimate is 43c for EPS and $11.23B for revenue, according to First Call. Cisco underwent a massive corporate overhaul last year, which involved layoffs and widespread restructuring, in an attempt to get back on track. Now leaner, Cisco says all the upheaval is paying off. Optimists await what they expect will be further signs of recovery from the networking giant. Wall Street expects Cisco to report a stable quarter, buoyed in part by improving enterprise demand in the U.S. Options activity also hints at high expectations for Cisco's quarterly report. But, in five of the past six quarters, Cisco stock has been hit hard after not living up to expectations. The whisper number is set a bit higher, arriving at earnings of 46c per share. Investors will be closely monitoring Cisco's results for evidence that the switch maker is fighting off rivals such as Juniper Networks (JNPR), which cut its Q4 forecast last month on weakness in the U.S. service provider market, and from Hewlett-Packard (HPQ). Guidance from its last earning calls is for Q2 revenue of approximately $11.14B-$11.24B, or 7%-8% growth year-over-year. Cisco also sees Q2 GAAP pre-tax charges of up to $100M, adjusted operating margin 26%-27%, and a non-GAAP tax provision rate of approximately 22%. Sterne Agee's Shaw Wu also expects good Q2 numbers as, "Checks indicate stable demand trends -- in terms of product segments." Wu explained that product refreshes, such as the new versions of Cisco's Catalyst and Nexus switches, are helping boost sales. Consensus for Q3: 45c on $11.46B in revenue. Consensus for FY12: $1.677/$45.83B. Consensus for FY13: $1.94/$48.65B. Expectations are for a post-earnings move of about 6% for Cisco shares, up or down, based on Tuesday's activity of weekly options that expire on Friday. This is below the average 10% move for the past four quarters. Some speculate, that even if Cisco posts a strong profit, we could see a "sell on the news" -- as the stock closed Tuesday just 10% shy of the consensus' 12-month price target of $22. :theflyonthewall.com

theflyonthewall.com: Jim Cramer's "Mad Money"
Jim Cramer said that now's the time to 'tip-toe' back into the markets, not run for the exits. Cramer said it's true that the markets have been up six weeks in a row, but that doesn't mean that investors need to worry about bubbles. Cramer said he hears the calls of a bubble in tech stocks, but with bellwethers like Intel (INTC) and Microsoft (MSFT) trading at just 10X earnings, a fraction of what they were just a few years ago, how can that be a bubble? He said that even Apple (AAPL) trades at just 7X earnings after backing out the company's nearly $100B in cash. Some have called a bubble in retail, but Walmart (WMT) still trades below where it did a decade ago. The same is true with the oil stocks, with companies like Exxon-Mobil (XOM) and Chevron (CVX) both trading at super-low valuations. Cramer recalled how he received hate mail after endorsing the Google (GOOG) IPO at $80 a share, only to see that company double and double and double again. Cramer explained that with 840M active users of Facebook, there's no denying that retail demand for this IPO will be huge. However with so few shares available, just about all of those investors will be forced to buy in the aftermarket. He said if shares double on the IPO, it's likely that the valuation would be too high and investors should sell no matter what. If shares rise only slightly however, it's possible that shares of Facebook would be worth holding onto. EXECUTIVE DECISION: Cramer once again welcomed with Jack Hartung, CFO of Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG), a stock that dipped 2% after it reported a 2c earnings miss on a 23% rise in revenues. Shares of Chipotle are up 650% since Cramer first got behind the company six years ago. Cramer told viewers that the dip in Chipotle's stock price is the perfect buying opportunity and they should stick with the company. Cramer also sat down with Irvin Simon, chairman, president and CEO of Hain Celestial (HAIN), which delivered a 3c earnings beat on a 33% gain in revenues form last year. Shares of Hain have returned 129% since Cramer first recommended it in April 2010. Cramer remained bullish on Hain. Then, Cramer spoke with David Pyott, chairman, president and CEO of Allergan (AGN), a stock that got hammered down 3% after the company reported only in-line sales and earnings. Pyott was bullish on his company's flagship product, Botox, and on the outlook for some of their drugs in the pipeline -- including ones for overactive bladder. Cramer remained bullish on Allergan and said Thursday's price dip makes for an excellent entry point for investors. LIGHTNING ROUND: (Bullish) HUN; CBOU; SBUX. (Bearish) ARMH; BTU; MWW.
