WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. wholesalers cut their stockpiles slightly in December while their sales were unchanged, suggesting businesses were cautious at the end of a weak quarter.

The Commerce Department said Friday that wholesale business stockpiles dipped 0.1 percent in December from November to $497.7 billion. That followed a 0.4 percent rise the previous month.

Inventories of furniture and automotive goods fell by the most in more than three years. Farm product stockpiles also dropped sharply, likely reflecting the impact of this summer's drought in the Midwest.

Less restocking reduces factory production, which slows economic growth. A big decline in restocking was a major reason the government estimated last week that the economy shrank in the October-December quarter.

Separately, the Commerce Department said the U.S. trade deficit narrowed sharply in December because exports rose while oil imports plummeted. The smaller trade gap means the economy almost surely grew in the October-December quarter ? an improvement from the government's initial estimate last week.

Still, the slower growth in restocking will offset some of the improvement from a brighter trade picture. Both figures were not available when the government reported its estimate last week. The government will issue its second estimate for fourth-quarter growth on Feb. 28.

Sluggish restocking by companies and deep cuts in defense spending are expected to keep growth at the end of last year weak.

Economists at Barclays Capital on Friday said they now expect growth at an annual rate of 0.3 percent in the October-December quarter.

(AP) ? The classic Monopoly game is set for its most significant change in decades after fans of the game designed nearly 80 years ago voted to add a new token to replace the shoe, wheelbarrow or iron after they received the least support in an online contest.

Toy maker Hasbro Inc. is scheduled to announce the new token lineup Wednesday morning, hours after fans cast their final ballots to determine which of the five proposed pieces to add and which of the existing tokens to eject.

The tokens identify the players and have changed quite a lot since Parker Brothers bought the game from its original designer in 1935.

The voting closed just before midnight Tuesday. Rhode Island-based Hasbro says the wheelbarrow, shoe and iron were neck and neck for elimination through the Save Your Token Campaign. The new addition will be a robot, diamond ring, cat, helicopter or guitar.

Fans from more than 120 countries have voted.

The online contest to change the tokens was sparked by chatter on Facebook, where Monopoly has more than 10 million fans. The initiative was intended to ensure that a game created nearly eight decades ago remains relevant and engaging to fans today.

Monopoly's iconic tokens originated when the niece of game creator Charles Darrow suggested using charms from her charm bracelet for tokens. The real-estate trading game is based on the streets of Atlantic City, N.J., and has sold more than 275 million games worldwide.

The current eight tokens are an iron, racecar, Scottie dog, a shoe, thimble, top hat, wheelbarrow and battleship. Most of the pieces were introduced with the first Parker Brothers iteration of the game in 1935, and the Scottie dog and wheelbarrow were added in the early 1950s.

Versions of Monopoly with the new token will come out later this year.

Berlusconi brother slammed for soccer player slur

ROME (AP) ? Last week it was Silvio Berlusconi who got into hot water for praising Benito Mussolini. This week it's the former premier's younger brother who has sparked outrage ? by calling an Italian superstar soccer player of African descent the family's "little black boy."

In a much viewed video clip, Paolo Berlusconi told a crowd of supporters Sunday that he was off to the soccer stadium to see Mario Balotelli, a prolific striker recently acquired by his brother's AC Milan soccer team ? calling him by an insulting and patronizing term for black people.

Italy has had blatant episodes of racism in soccer, with monkey chants against black players a relatively common occurrence. Paolo Berlusconi's racist quip in Milan ("Now, let's go see the family's little black boy, the hot head") provoked chuckles among the friendly crowd, although scathing comments soon flooded the Internet.

While the brothers' comments have caused international bafflement, there may be a political element.

They come in the midst of an election campaign in which the elder Berlusconi hopes to make a political comeback, and have raised speculation his camp sees any public stir as one that will help their cause, especially as it angles for far-right support.

Silvio Berlusconi raised eyebrows last week by praising the late Italian fascist dictator for having "done good" as Europe observed Holocaust remembrance day. Some commentators saw a ploy to steal votes from a new small but growing far-right force.

There has also been speculation that Berlusconi bought the services of the popular Balotelli in the first place to boost his election chances. Team officials have described Balotelli's transfer from Manchester City as a dream come true. The billionaire business baron, who has been premier three times since creating a center-right party in the early 1990s, has been running second in most opinion polls, behind the center-left's candidate.

A cartoon in Corriere della Sera recently depicted Berlusconi after the Balotelli deal as campaigning as a black man in an AC Milan uniform. The media mogul on Wednesday denied that his team acquired Balotelli to secure an advantage at the ballot box ? not just on the football pitch.

"I had no thought, not even 0.0 percent, that Balotelli could help the electoral campaign," Berlusconi said during a radio interview.

Balotelli, a member of the Italian national soccer team, was born in Sicily to Ghanaian parents. His spectacular skills have won him millions of fans, even as his volatile personality has brought him his own share of controversy.

Immigration is a relatively new phenomenon in Italy, which for many years had been a source of emigrants, first to the Americas, and then to northern Europe. The main coalition partner in Berlusconi's three governments was an anti-immigrant party whose former leader once referred to immigrants as "bingo bongos."

Children born in Italy who have non-Italian parents have to wait until they are 18 before they can become Italian citizens.

Reflecting usage by the broader Italian public, Italian mainstream media often use clich?s long shunned in other cultures to refer to foreigners. For example, it is not uncommon for news stories to refer to Chinese on second, or even first reference as those "people with almond-shaped eyes."

As more Italians travel abroad, and as their children increasingly sit side-by-side in classrooms with immigrants' offspring ? who speak Italian like the locals and root for Italy's soccer teams ? sensitivity to racial and ethnic slurs is slowing growing.

Balotelli was often the target of racial chants from opposing fans when he played for Inter, AC Milan's cross-town rival. Juventus fans once hung a banner saying, "Black Italians don't exist."

But there are concrete signs of progress.

Last month, Balotelli's new teammates at Berlusconi's squad walked off the field during a friendly after racist chants were directed at midfielder Kevin-Prince Boateng, who is from Ghana.

Balotelli made no immediate public comment about Paolo Berlusconi, the vice-president of AC Milan, describing him as the household's "little black boy." But he has been cautiously optimistic about changing attitudes toward blacks on a continent where they are relatively recently new arrivals in large numbers.

"Racism is very tough to fight," Balotelli said recently. "I really don't know how to defeat it. You need to keep firm and sooner or later we'll win," he said.

On Sunday, at the game Paolo Berlusconi set out to watch, Balotelli scored both of his new team's goals in a 2-1 win over Udinese.

(AP) ? Shaken by the assassination of a prominent leftist opposition leader that unleashed major protests, Tunisia's prime minister announced Wednesday that he would form a new government of technocrats to guide the country to elections "as soon as possible."

The decision by Prime Minister Hamadi Jebali was a clear concession to the opposition, which has long demanded a reshuffle of the Islamist-dominated government. It also came hours after the first assassination of a political leader in post-revolutionary Tunisia.

The killing of 48-year-old Chokri Belaid, a secularist and fierce critic of Ennahda, the moderate ruling Islamist party, marked an escalation in the country's political violence and sparked allegations of government negligence ? even outright complicity. It also bolstered fears that Tunisia's transition to democracy will be far more chaotic than originally hoped.

"This is a sad day that shook the country regardless of our differences," Jebali said in an address to the nation, whose capital city still smelled of the tear gas lobbed at protesters angry over the killing. "We are at a crossroads, and we will learn from it to make a peaceful Tunisia, secure and pluralist, where we may differ but not kill each other."

The ruling coalition, led by Jebali's Ennahda party, had been in stalled negotiations with opposition parties to expand the coalition and redistribute ministerial portfolios in an effort to calm the country's fractious politics. Elections had been expected for the summer, but an exact date depended on lawmakers finishing work on a new constitution.

Jebali said the new ministers in the technocratic government "would not belong to any party and its task would be limited to organizing elections as soon as possible with a neutral administration." The statement implied that Jebali would be leading the new government and that its selection was imminent.

Tunisians overthrew their long-ruling dictator Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in January 2011, kicking off a wave of pro-democracy uprisings across the Middle East and North Africa that have met with varying degrees of success.

With its relatively small, well-educated population of 10 million, Tunisia has been widely expected to have the best chance of successfully transitioning to democracy. Its first post-dictatorship election brought to power the moderate Islamists of Ennahda in a coalition with two secular parties.

With the fall of the country's secular dictatorship, however, hardline Islamist groups also have flourished and there have been a string of attacks by ultraconservative Muslims known as Salafis against arts, culture and people they deemed to be impious.

In the last few months, there also have appeared the Leagues to Protect the Revolution, groups that say they are fighting corruption and seeking out remnants of the Ben Ali regime.

But opposition leaders such as Belaid said the leagues have become Ennahda-backed goon squads that attacked opposition rallies. Last weekend saw a string of attacks against such meetings, including a rally held by Belaid's Popular Front in northern Tunisia.

Belaid, a lawyer, was shot four times point blank as he left his house in Tunis on Wednesday morning. He was taken to a nearby clinic where he died. His wife told French Radio RTL he was shot twice in the head, once in the neck and once in the heart.

"He died for the country. He died for democracy," Basma Belaid said. "He was threatened all the time," she added, holding Ennahda directly responsible for his death.

Belaid's funeral is scheduled for Friday and the family has said members of the ruling coalition will not be welcome.

As word of the assassination spread, demonstrators converged on the Interior Ministry in the center of the capital chanting anti-government slogans.

The scenes were reminiscent of the final days of Ben Ali as protesters surged down the tree-lined Bourguiba Avenue shouting "the people want the fall of the regime" and were met with volleys of tear gas and riot police.

At one point, the ambulance containing Belaid's body, surrounded by angry mourners, headed toward the ministry before it was driven off by tear gas.

By late afternoon, the center of the city was largely deserted and littered with stones, guarded by police armored vehicles and patrolled by a tank from the national guard. Knots of riot police chased protesters through the elegant downtown streets.

At least one policeman died in the clashes, the Interior Ministry said.

Protests flared across the rest of the country as well, with fierce clashes in the southern town of Gafsa and the coastal cities of Sousse and Monastir. Ennahda offices were also attacked in several towns, according to media reports.

Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki, a member of a secular party in the governing coalition, called the Belaid assassination a threat against all Tunisians in a speech before the European Parliament in Strasbourg before he rushed home, canceling a trip to Cairo.

"All these destabilization attempts ? and there will be others because for some the Tunisian model should not succeed ? I can tell you that we will face the challenge and defeat it," he told journalists.

The assassination also comes as Tunisia is struggling to revive its economy. On Monday, the central bank head, Chedli Ayari, said that while the country was on the road to recovery, the political squabbling had to be resolved to reassure foreign and Tunisian investors.

"This assassination is the gravest incident yet in a climate of mounting violence," said Eric Goldstein, deputy Middle East and North Africa director at Human Rights Watch. "Since Tunisia's revolution, there have been violent assaults against journalists, political activists, artists, and simple citizens, many of which the authorities did not investigate, let alone prosecute."

Several opposition parties suspended their participation in the constitutional assembly over the assassination and are now calling for a general strike, which could further inflame tensions. By Wednesday evening, however, they had yet to react to Jebali's announcement of a caretaker government.

Nejib Chebbi of the centrist Jomhouri Party warned prior to Jebali's announcement that other political figures could be targeted for assassination, and he called for the dissolution of the Leagues to Protect the Revolution.

The night before his death, Belaid had called for the dissolution of those leagues as well.

"There are groups inside Ennahda inciting violence," Belaid told the Nessma TV channel. He alleged that Ennahda leader "Rachid Ghannouchi considers the leagues to be the conscience of the nation, so the defense of the authors of violence is clear. All those who oppose Ennahda become the targets of violence."

Ennahda, however, has denied supporting any violence and promised an investigation into the assassination. Ghannouchi called Belaid's killing an "ignoble crime" and offered his condolences to his family.

As international condemnation of the assassination swiftly poured in, several countries expressed worry over the violence in Tunisia.

"There is no justification for an outrageous and cowardly act of violence like this," U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters. "There's no place in the new Tunisia for violence. We urge the government of Tunisia to conduct a fair, transparent and professional investigation to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice, consistent with Tunisian and international law."

French President Francois Hollande also expressed worry. "This murder deprives Tunisia of one of its most courageous and free voices," he said in a statement.

Don't ?Flatten? Your Conversation with Customers

There?s a tendency to hurry through a conversation with a customer who has an issue. You want to figure out what the problem is and fix it as soon as you can so they don?t complain to their friends or stop buying from you altogether. But in your haste to make amends, you may not get their full story.

Not that trying to fix an issue quickly is a bad thing, of course. You do want to solve the problem and get the customer back to buying things from you in order to restore balance. The issue, though, is we often forget to follow up on our instincts during this period. There may be underlying issues we need to address, but we gloss over during the conversation. Small business owners tend to be ?fixers,? but sometimes it?s time to just sit back and listen.

Anything Else?

There?s one phrase that can easily lead to a better, less ?flat? conversation with your customers: Can I help you with anything else? This follow-up is widely used but not as effectively as it should be.

Most people aren?t going to have a follow-up question ready, even though they may have an issue they need resolved. This is where your business instincts should kick in. During the conversation, you should have picked up on some cues that something else was wrong ? either a bigger problem or one related to the offending incident that shows where the real issue is.

If you don?t follow this instinct, the conversation could die before you got to the real meat of the problem. For example, your customer may complain on Facebook their product isn?t quite working right. Normally after you fix the product or replace it, that?s the end of the exchange. However, your instincts kick in and you realize this has been an ongoing issue with the customer and he?s thinking about not buying anything else. You?ve suddenly stumbled upon a deeper problem.

Use It to Expand

This continuous PR doesn?t just smooth things over with your customer, it can drastically change your company. You may learn things about the business you otherwise wouldn?t have and be all the better for it.

If the customer above was repeatedly having problems with your product and it was just a coincidence, that?s one thing. Sometimes products don?t work and accidents happen. There?s really no way around that.

However, if he?s been having problems due to no fault of his own and it?s a repeat offense, you may have suddenly learned where your company needs to focus. Maybe your product is more complicated than you thought for the average user, and needs to come with a tutorial. This is why leveraging different PR techniques is so effective ? not only do you learn all about your customers, but you learn quite a bit about yourself as well.

What steps do you take to get the full story from your customers?
