Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak is among the most avid tweeters in Minnesota politics. The candidates vying to replace him have some catching up to do.

As the chart shows, only Council Member Betsy Hodges approaches the mayor's Twitter acumen. But several other candidates have recently begun to ramp up their social media activity.

Council Member Gary Schiff, who maintains an active (and at times irreverent) Facebook presence, has only 24 tweets to his name in the last four years. But 19 of them were posted since mid-December, right around the time he formed his mayoral exploratory committee.

Council Member Don Samuels and former Council Member Jackie Cherryhomes both signed up for Twitter last spring, but they each appear to have found their 140-character voices this month. Samuels kicks off his campaign today. Cherryhomes will do so in the coming weeks.

School Board Member Hussein Samatar has a relatively robust Twitter presence, but hasn't decided whether he'll run. Theater executive Tom Hoch, Park Board Commissioner Bob Fine and former Hennepin County Commissioner Mark Andrew are also thinking about running, but none of them appear to have Twitter accounts. At least not yet.

Canon PowerShot ELPH 330 HS and 115 IS hands-on (video)

In Japan, they've been coined the IXUS 255 HS and IXUS 132, but folks in the US will probably recognize them as the ELPH 330 HS and 115 IS. By any name, they're Canon's two mid-range point-and-shoots for CP+, and while they were joined by the A2500 during this week's announcements, that latter model didn't seem to make it to the company's booth here in Yokohama. In any case, if you've handled an ELPH model in recent years, you know what to expect here -- Canon's design hasn't changed much, but we're not complaining. The 330 HS includes a 12.1-megapixel CMOS sensor, compared to a 16-megapixel CCD in the slightly smaller 115 IS.

Cosmetically, the biggest difference between the two is the powerful 10x optical zoom lens on the 330 HS, compared to a still-respectable 8x optic on the lower-end model. Both cameras offer the same familiar PowerShot UI, and they look nearly identical with the lens retracted. Zoomed in, however, it's clear which camera is the more capable of the bunch. Both performed very well during our hands-on at Canon's booth, though we'd definitely opt for the 330 HS, which offers a superior sensor and extended lens, not to mention built-in WiFi -- it's definitely worth spending an extra 60 bucks to snag the $230 HS model. Both cameras are set to ship beginning in March, but you can check them out in our walkthrough today, embedded just past the break.

The Always Up-To-Date Guide to Rooting the Most Popular Android Phones

We love Android, but rooting your phone can give you the opportunity to do so much more than your phone can do out of the box?whether its wireless tethering, speeding it up with overclocking, or customizing the look of your phone with themes. Here's how to root some of the most popular phones with minimal effort.

Rooting, for those of you that don't know, means giving yourself root permissions on your phone. It's similar running programs as administrators in Windows, or running a command with sudo in Linux. With a rooted phone, you can run more apps (like backup or tethering apps), as well as flash custom ROMs to your phone, which add all sorts of extra features. If you're on the fence about rooting, check out our top 10 root-only apps that make it worth the hassle.

There are a ton of different Android phones out there, and while some rooting methods might work for multiple phones, there is no one-size-fits-all guide for rooting every phone out there. As such, we can't show you how to root every phone in existence, especially since we can't test every method. So we're going to post methods for the ten most popular Android phones among our readers and the ones you voted as the five best, and keep it updated as new phones come out (in fact, we recently just updated it with five new phones for 2013). If your phone isn't on the list, be sure to check the Where to Go if Your Phone Isn't Listed section for suggestions on where you can find more info pertaining to your specific device.

If your phone is on the list but the rooting method is outdated, send me an email at whitson+rootingguide@lifehacker.com with a link to the updated method. I can't test most of the phones on this list, and keeping up with root methods is very difficult, so we're relying on you to help us out a bit. Telling me a method didn't work for you won't help me keep the guide up to date. The process may have not worked for any number of reasons, even if it's up to date, so only email me if you can verify that a new method is working (or that there is no new method). Please don't email me asking me how to root your unlisted phone. I don't know how to do it. I only own one phone, and I've just used the resources at the end of this guide to find the listed rooting methods. See the Where to Go if Your Phone Isn't Listed section for more information on unlisted phones.

Glossary of Rooting Terms

As you learn more about the rooting process, you'll probably run into a bunch of terms that can be confusing. Here are some of the most important ones and what they mean.

Rooting Terms

• Root: Rooting means you have root access to your device?that is, it can run the sudo command, and has enhanced privileges allowing it to run apps like Wireless Tether or SetCPU. You can root either by installing the Superuser application?which many of the below root processes include?or by flashing a custom ROM that has root access included.
• ROM: A ROM is a modified version of Android. It may contain extra features, a different look, speed enhancements, or even a version of Android that hasn't been released yet. We won't discuss ROMs in depth here, but if you want to use one once you're rooted, you can read more about doing that here.
• Flash: Flashing essentially means installing something on your device, whether it be a ROM, a kernel, or something else that comes in the form of a ZIP file. Sometimes the rooting process requires flashing ZIP file, sometimes it doesn't.
• Bootloader: Your bootloader is the lowest level of software on your phone, running all the code that's necessary to start up your operating system. Most bootloaders come locked, which keeps you from rooting your phone. Unlocking your bootloader doesn't root your phone directly, but it does allow you to root, then flash custom ROMs if you so desire.
• Recovery: Your recovery is the software on your phone that lets you make backups, flash ROMs, and perform other system-level tasks. The default recoveries can't do much, but you can flash a custom recovery?like ClockworkMod?after you've unlocked your bootloader that will give you much more control over your device. This is often an integral part of the rooting process.
• ADB: ADB stands for Android Debug Bridge, and it's a command line tool for your computer that can communicate with an Android device you've connected to it. It's part of the Android Software Developers Kit (SDK). Many of the root tools below use ADB, whether you're typing the commands yourself or not. Unless the instructions call for installing the SDK and running ADB commands, you won't need to mess with it?you'll just need to know that it's what most of the tools use to root your phone.
• S-OFF: HTC phones use a feature called Signature Verification in HBOOT, their bootloader. By default, your phone has S-ON, which means it blocks you from flashing radio images?the code that manages your data, Wi-Fi, and GPS connections. Switching your phone to S-OFF lets you flash new radios. Rooting doesn't require S-OFF, but many rooting tools will give you S-OFF in addition to root access, which is nice.
• RUU and SBF: ROM Upgrade Utilities (for HTC phones) and System Boot Files (for Motorola phones) are files direct from the manufacturer that change the software on your phone. RUU and SBF files are how the manufacturers deliver your over-the-air upgrades, and modders often post leaked RUU and SBF files for flashing when the updates haven't been released yet. They're also handy when downgrading your phone, if a rooting method isn't available for the newest software version yet. You can flash RUUs right from your HTC phone, but Motorola users will need a Windows program called RSD Lite to flash SBF files.

Rooting Methods

Here you'll find what we think are the best rooting methods for the 10 most popular phones among Lifehacker readers. We won't go through the nitty gritty details of each method, since we can't test them ourselves, but we will tell you what you need and what each method entails. Before rooting, we recommend you read up a bit more on your phone, and we've provided some links for further reading at the end of each description. Click on your phone's thumbnail below for more.

Where to Go If Your Phone Isn't Listed

Just because your phone isn't listed doesn't mean it isn't rootable (in fact, some of the above methods might work on other phones). Some rooting tools root multiple phones, and HTC's official unlocking method will unlock the bootloader of nearly any HTC phone?which gets you part of the way toward rooting (you'll need to look up more information on how to flash a recovery to your specific device). It's also worth mentioning that there can be multiple methods out there. HTC's official route isn't always the easiest method, so if your phone has a one-click tool available, it's usually better to use that because it's quicker, will give you S-OFF, and won't leave a digital "watermark" on your phone that permanently voids your warranty. Lastly, SuperOneClick is a great one-click app that roots a ton of phones, especially older ones, so do a bit of googling and see if it works for yours?because it's just about the easiest root method out there.

The best way to research your phone, though, would be to check out the All Things Root section of your phone's forum at Android Forums. If you find your phone's subforum and click on All Things Root, there's almost always a sticky post with info on rooting methods, ROMs, and other special troubleshooting tips that could apply to your specific phone. Looking up your phone on the XDA Developers forums is always a great idea too, and the CyanogenMod Wiki often has lots of information on rooting and flashing ROMs as well (even if you aren't flashing CyanogenMod). With a bit of research, you should be able to find at least one guide that works for your specific device.

Cookie Monster? Chunk of German statue stolen

A ransom note signed by the "Cookie Monster" was sent to a German newspaper, along with a photograph of somebody dressed up as the "Sesame Street" character.

MAINZ, Germany ? When a famous 44-pound metal cookie was stolen from outside a German factory, there was one obvious suspect. But few would have expected the Cookie Monster himself to claim responsibility for the crime.

The giant golden snack has been a landmark as part of a statue at leading cookie manufacturer Bahlsen's site?in Hannover since 1913 until it vanished on Jan. 21.

This week, the first clue emerged when a ransom note made up of letters cut from newspapers and signed by the "Cookie Monster"?was sent to a local newspaper.

The sender demanded that a shipment of cookies be sent to to a local children?s hospital. "The ones with milk chocolate, not the ones with dark chocolate or without chocolate," the letter read.?

And should the request not be fulfilled? "The golden cookie would be sent to the trash can of Oscar the Grouch," the ransom note warned.

An accompanying photo showed someone dressed up as the famous "Sesame Street" character taking a big bite from a golden cookie.

Investigators are unsure whether it is the actual metal cookie missing from Bahlsen or just a hoax. "The ransom note and the photo have been forwarded to criminalists for investigation," a police spokesman in Hannover said.

Police have received only one other tip: Witnesses reported having seen two men with a ladder working at the statue two weeks ago.

Experts say the theft of the cookie could be connected to rising thefts of metal across Germany, as the value of bronze, iron and other metals has gone up significantly.?In recent years, thieves have stolen electric cables, bells and even train tracks in Germany and other European countries.

So far, there are only crumbly clues in the investigation, but the company has offered the equivalent of more than $1,300 for any information leading to the recovery of the historic golden cookie.

Company boss Werner Bahlsen made a public appeal for the return of the cookie in a Wednesday news conference, adding, "We refuse to be ?blackmailed."

Low-Cost Mobile Device Uses the Cloud to Speed Up Diagnostic ...

Columbia engineering professor Sam Sia's handheld mobile device is a fast, low-cost device that uses the cloud to speed up diagnostic testing for HIV and other diseases.

Samuel K. Sia, associate professor of biomedical engineering at Columbia Engineering, has taken his innovative lab-on-a-chip and developed a way to not only check a patient's HIV status anywhere in the world with just a finger prick, but also synchronize the results automatically and instantaneously with central health-care records?10 times faster, the researchers say, than the benchtop ELISA, a broadly used diagnostic technique. The device was field-tested in Rwanda by a collaborative team from the Sia lab and ICAP at Columbia's Mailman School of Public Health.

In the study published online Jan. 18, 2013, in Clinical Chemistry, and in the print April 2013 issue, Sia describes a major advance towards providing people in remote areas of the world with laboratory-quality diagnostic services traditionally available only in centralized health care settings.

"We've built a handheld mobile device that can perform laboratory-quality HIV testing, and do it in just 15 minutes and on finger-pricked whole blood," Sia says. "And, unlike current HIV rapid tests, our device can pick up positive samples normally missed by lateral flow tests, and automatically synchronize the test results with patient health records across the globe using both the cell phone and satellite networks."

Sia collaborated with Claros Diagnostics (a company he co-founded, now called OPKO Diagnostics) to develop a pioneering strategy for an integrated microfluidic-based diagnostic device?the mChip?that can perform complex laboratory assays, and do so with such simplicity that these tests can easily be carried out anywhere, including in resource-limited settings, at a very low cost. This new study builds upon his earlier scientific concepts and incorporates a number of new engineering elements that make the test automated to run with data communication over both cell phone and satellite networks.

"There are a set of core functions that such a mobile device has to deliver," he says. "These include fluid pumping, optical detection, and real-time synchronization of diagnostic results with patient records in the cloud. We've been able to engineer all these functions on a handheld mobile device and all powered by a battery."

This new technology, which combines cell phone and satellite communication technologies with fluid miniaturization techniques for performing all essential ELISA functions, could lead to diagnosis and treatment for HIV-infected people who, because they cannot get to centralized healthcare centers, do not get tested or treated.

"This is an important step forward for us towards making a real impact on patients," says Jessica Justman, MD, senior technical director at ICAP and associate clinical professor of medicine in epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health. "And with the real-time data upload, policymakers and epidemiologists can also monitor disease prevalence across geographical regions more quickly and effectively."

Working with ICAP, OPKO, the Rwandan Ministry of Health, and Rwandan collaborators at Muhima Hospital and two health clinics?Projet San Francisco and Projet Ubuzima, Sia and his team assessed the device's ability to perform HIV testing and then synchronized results in real time with the patients' electronic health records. They successfully tested over 200 serum, plasma, and whole blood samples, all collected in Rwanda.

The mobile device also successfully transmitted all whole-blood test results from a Rwandan clinic to a medical records database stored on the cloud. The device produced results in agreement with a leading ELISA test, including detection of weakly positive samples that were missed by existing rapid tests. The device operated autonomously with minimal user input, produced each result in 15 minutes (compared to 3 hours with the benchtop ELISA), and consumed as little power as a mobile phone.

This latest study builds on previous work from the Sia Lab on building a lab-on-a-chip for personal health diagnosis. For this earlier device, Columbia University was named a Medical Devices runner-up in The Wall Street Journal's prestigious Technology Innovation Awards in 2011.

This research has been funded by a $2-million Saving Lives at Birth transition grant (United States Agency for International Development, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Government of Norway, Grand Challenges Canada, and the World Bank).

Sia's next step will be to implement an antenatal care panel for diagnosing HIV and sexually transmitted diseases for pregnant women in Rwanda. He is also exploring the use of this technology for improving personal health for consumers in the United States.

"The ability to perform state-of-the-art diagnostics on mobile devices has the potential to revolutionize how patients manage their health," Sia says. "I'm pleased with the progress we have made so far, and we are working hard with our collaborators to bring this technology to clinicians, patients, and consumers."

No, this isn?t a guest column by Aaron Levie. Though he and his startup Box, the poster child of the ?sexy enterprise,? are definitely included in the bunch. ?You should definitely kick Aaron off the list. Just to mess with him,? Zendesk founder Mikkel Svane commented when he heard what we were writing.

With VCs voting with their feet and eschewing consumer startups this play period, we?re seeing a major shift of sentiment and momentum to enterprise startups. Perhaps the most major in a while, definitely as far as we can remember. Venture money that a year ago was going into consumer deals is now flowing into enterprise, as the Series A crunch and reticence about Facebook?s lackluster IPO has dampened investor enthusiasm?for photosharing apps and their ilk.

In contrast to Facebook, a series of stellar enterprise IPOs like?Palo Alto Networks, Splunk and (perhaps the original enterprise cool kid) Workday have fired the collective entrepreneurial?imagination. ?We see entrepreneurs come in every other day telling us how they?re going to reinvent Splunk,? Sequoia?s Aaref Hilaly tells me. ?The successful enterprise IPOs serve as beacons for the companies that come after them.?

Although the VC profits baseline has traditionally come from enterprise deals, they certainly weren?t media darlings. Consumer startups, despite their high beta and tendency to be outliers, were the belle of the mainstream tech blog ball. ?Consumer technology tends to create fewer winners. Its easier to keep track of what a Facebook or a Twitter may be doing than myriad enterprise software vendors,? NetSuite CEO Zach Nelson notes. ?[There it] may take decades to decide the actual winners.?

But the hype is changing. Conversations about ?the next Instagram? at Coupa, The Creamery or on Caltrain have been replaced with staid assessments about the future of Big Data, storage and the cloud. The mobile, social, local gold rush of 2011 has been put on pause, at least as far as consumer Internet is concerned. VCs are?staffing up with enterprise experts to handle the sharp shift in focus. We?ve even heard someone was working on something described only as, ?a Path for enterprise.?

While the phenomenon is recent enough that the exact flow of investment dollars from consumer to enterprise has yet to be captured in a study, the data points are beginning to pop up. For example 2012 was the?first year in First Round Capital?s history in which consumer companies were less than 50 percent of investment dollars, according to a report it published this week. Expect to see many more of these sorts of reports. And more enterprise coverage on TechCrunch.

Enterprise startups are finally the cool kids. Nay, sexy.

?I would say the market is schizophrenic,? says Marc Andreessen, on why Workday > Facebook might not mean the end of investor interest in social. ?Right now we are in an era where the market wants enterprise companies. I am just saying, ?Wait a year, that will flip again; wait another year after that, that will flip again.??

For now it?s enterprise?s time to shine. Due to the ubiquity of mobile computing, the cloud and the Bring Your Own Device movement, the lines are blurring between enterprise startups and consumer startups.?Is Google Apps an enterprise product? Is Dropbox? Is Evernote??With an increasing proliferation of these sorts of enterprisumer startups, we?re a far cry from the IBM SAGE era, where the only computing customers were literally big businesses.

In the past everything was top down. Large corporations and the government spent a lot of money on R&D, and technologies developed in that R&D like the mainframe/computer, the color TV and even the Internet would trickle down from large institutions to the mainstream user. Once these products hit the mainstream, the gravitational pull of the mainstream and its purchasing power slowly changed the adoption cycle from top down to bottom up.

?Consumers can make buying decisions much more quickly than businesses can,? Andreessen points, ?because for the consumer, they either like it or they don?t, whereas businesses have to go through these long and involved processes.? He maintains that the reason the enterprise wasn?t particularly appealing for many entrepreneurs between 2000-2008 was that consumer software was the only software that anybody could adopt.? This is no longer the case, as the enterprise world evolves from a sales-driven to a product-driven approach.

?

?The user is now the buyer, and the center of gravity is no longer in IT, it?s actually in the line of business themselves,? says Christian Gheorghe,?CEO of mobile first metrics management startup?Tidemark, outlining the factors in that evolution. ?The cloud is not just a cost-based improvement, but a new computational platform. And mobile is surpassing the desktop.?

?The demand for ?consumer-grade? enterprise technologies ? from the?standpoint?of having strong UX, being mobile, and platform agnostic ? is an?irreversible?trend,? says Levie. ?To the point that hard-to-use enterprise software will soon become more surprising than well-designed enterprise software (give it a few years).?

?Today all the consumerized enterprise stuff is as easily usable by the small business as it is by the large business,? Andreessen explains. ?In fact, it?s probably more easily usable by the small business than it is by the large business, because with a small business, it?s like you can just use it. You don?t have to go through a long process, you don?t have to have a lot of meetings, you don?t have to have committees, you don?t have to have all this stuff. You can just start picking up and using it.?

Because of this confluence of elements, an enterprise startup?s ?land and expand? strategy has become more complex than having a huge sales force or wining and dining the CIO. It actually boils down to making a product that people want to use, as consumers are already using cloud products, and fall back on them when their older enterprise solutions fail.

?The Exchange Server is down? No problem, I?ll use Gmail. Email policy doesn?t allow an attachment over 2 GB. No problem, I?ll use YouSendIt, Dropbox or Box,? Ron Miller?succinctly puts it.?Box?s early business customers were CIOs who called into the company with concerns about security,?irate that their employees were using the platform to covertly share files. Those calls eventually turned into deals. In fact, one could argue that consumer startup Dropbox was the best thing to ever happened to Box, familiarizing the layman with cloud file sharing. Box then innovated on the use case, by offering increased security and controls to appease CIOs and enterprise execs.

?The first generation of this new enterprise wave was replacement technologies at lower prices (like Salesforce and SolarWinds),? says Asana co-founder Justin Rosenstein, ?but the new wave is technologies that compete by being better products. The *new* inefficiency to compete against isn?t just total cost of operations (through SaaS) or cost ? it?s beating them with a better product.?

Because adoption is getting easier and other related factors, we?re seeing an onslaught of entrepreneurs building products for businesses that employees actually can use or want to use. We?re even seeing the emergence of companies like Okta, which are enterprise only, but still display the ease of a consumer startup. Not only is the number of companies that are taking their design cues from the consumer Internet increasing, it is rapidly becoming the norm.

??Enterprise sexiness? has come from the increasing awareness that the new breed of vendors have gotten the consumerization thing right (especially with UI and mobile), and that the business models are known to be sustainable and viable,? says Workday co-founder Aneel Bhusri. ?Indeed, in the case of companies like Asana and Cloudera, some of the founders themselves came from the consumer Internet.?

That consumer background is helping the companies below get a lot more notice from VCs to consumers to the media because they know how to pitch themselves ? and yes many of them have pretty cool products, specifically targeting millennials just getting situated in the workforce. PeopleSoft, Aol?s HRM software, is as atrocious to use as its name sounds ? I?d much rather be using Workday.

While this list is by no means comprehensive (there are a ton of cool enterprise startups, and most people are vehement?favorites), here are just a few of the new guard that are fast becoming household names ? through their focus on intuitiveness and design, awareness of mobile and fresh approaches to decades-old problems.??The existing enterprise players are building software people tolerate,? as Rosenstein concisely puts it. ?The future players are building software people love.?

Okta

Okta is a single sign-on service for companies ? ?Facebook Connect? for the enterprise. As a user, you can log in to your company?s admin page and access both private data hosted on your company?s server (intranet) and data from cloud products like Box, Salesforce and Google Apps. Administrators can easily manage the credentials across various applications and devices.

Competitors: Salesforce has just launched Salesforce Identity to compete directly with Okta.

Secret sauce:?Okta is compatible with every web app you can think of. The startup has raised $52.5 million in?funding from Greylock Partners, Khosla Ventures, Andreessen Horowitz, FLOODGATE and Sequoia.

Cloudera

Cloudera is the solution de jour?for managing big data in a company, offering software, services and support for databases. When a user needs to analyze raw data to find a trend or to see if they can find valuable answers in unused data, Cloudera (built on top of Hadoop) allows them to complete more efficient queries.

Competitors: MapR?and Hortonworks, but they are much smaller. For big companies, they can ask for custom solutions from IBM, but it?s a lot more expensive.

Secret sauce:?Timing and it handles everything (software, development, support?). Cloudera has big funding as well, having raised $141 million from?Greylock, Accel, Meritech Capital Partners, In-Q-Tel and others.

Box

The original ?sexy? enterprise startup, Box?allows you to store, manage and collaborate on your documents in the cloud. Founded back in 2006 (before Dropbox!), the company is helmed by the colorful Aaron Levie. Like Okta, Box?s main advantage is that it integrates well with many enterprise apps and offers security in addition to collaboration functionality. Interoperability is crucial: Users can find their files uploaded to Box in their favorite CRM apps, etc.

Competitors: Microsoft SharePoint, consumer products, Dropbox, Google Drive?

Secret sauce: It was there first! Box effectively competes by constantly iterating on its product, focusing on enterprise even when Dropbox caught on, and good partnerships. Box has thus far raised $284 million from Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Scale Venture Partners,?Andreessen Horowitz and others.

GitHub

Developers need a place to track and share their code changes, and GitHub, with social coding features that make it really easy for open source projects, is the repository of choice. GitHub is so popular that its version control technology, Git, is replacing SVN based on merit. GitHub offers premium subscriptions and self-hosted versions, and many companies and startups have switched to private GitHub repositories, some very early (Spotify).

Competitors: Google Code for the social coding aspect, self-hosted repositories on an Intranet.

Secret sauce: Git. Git is such an ace technology that developers couldn?t resist adopting it, and GitHub is *the* best way to use Git. The runner up in the Bootstrapped Startup category at the 2011 Crunchies, GitHub eventually relented and took $100 million in Series A funding from Andreessen Horowitz last year.

Zendesk

Zendesk is user-friendly help desk software that allows companies to handle support requests in bulk. Zendesk is IPO-bound and, like enterprise pal Workday, might be another point of light in a series of lackluster tech IPOs.

Competitors:?Tons of companies are building desk software, and there are many open source apps for small and medium companies. Desk.com (formerly Assistly, acquired by Salesforce) and Tender Support are quite popular, but Tender Support doesn?t have the same breadth of resources as Zendesk.

Secret sauce:?Zendesk was the first modern help desk, but Desk.com is gaining a lot of traction with Salesforce behind it. The company has plenty of money in the bank, having raised $85.5 million from Charles River Ventures, Benchmark Capital, Matrix Partners, Redpoint Ventures, Index Ventures, GGV Capital, Goldman Sachs and Silicon Valley Bank.

Asana

Taking the lessons they learned from an early stint at Facebook, Asana co-founders Dustin Moskovitz and Justin Rosenstein have built a beautiful and streamlined collaboration tool with a focus on to-do lists. The interface is flexible and easy to understand. In Asana, everything is a to-do item. The platform?doesn?t try to do it all, but its design is very very intuitive, adhering humbly to its core goal of?easing communications within a team.

Competitors: Basecamp from 37signals, Do.com from Salesforce, and other communication tools that may make it useless (think Yammer) and many small alternatives (Producteev, Flow, etc.). For all these companies, the closest competitor might be basic emails.

Secret sauce:?The Asana product is relatively easy to use, and this is important for a latecomer to the collaboration software space. Pricing is friendly, too. For small companies, many of which have yet to switch to a collaboration tool, you can basically use it for free. Asana has raised over 38.2 million from?Peter Thiel,?Founders Fund?Benchmark?Capital,?Andreessen Horowitz and angels like Ron Conway and Adam D?Angelo.

GoodData

GoodData is a less expensive data-analytics solution for large companies. Companies can integrate GoodData?s platform into their own cloud-based SaaS products (i.e. Salesforce, Zendesk) and then access operational dashboards, data warehousing and advanced data reporting.

Competitors:?IBM, SAP and Oracle.

Secret sauce:?Cheaper than competitors, GoodData integrates easily with Zendesk and Salesforce to track, aggregate and analyze data. Its simplicity and ?out of the box? integrations make it ideal for small and medium enterprises. GoodData has $53.5 million in funding from?Andreessen Horowitz,?General Catalyst Partners,?Tim O?Reilly and others.

Atlassian

?The coolest thing to come out of Australia,? according to Accel?s Ping Li, Atlassian is low-cost project management software. It provides a series of enterprise web apps: Jira is a project-tracking tool focused on software development; Confluence is a more traditional collaboration and communication tool; and developers use many of its other smaller product offerings in their workflows. Finally, Atlassian acquired HipChat, a hip chat app.

Competitors: Open source project management solutions and native apps compete with Jira. Confluence competes with Basecamp, Yammer, etc. HipChat competes with Campfire from 37signals.

Secret sauce: Founded in 2002, Atlassian is not a kid anymore. Over the years, it has proved to be a reliable web app developer. The company has thus far raised $60 million in Series A solely from Accel Partners.

Nimble Storage

Nimble Storage is an online storage service for developers. It has found a way to provide a large storage capacity with 5x the performance and 5x the capacity as existing products from EMC and NetApp. Nimble Storage has a unique caching system based on the flash storage commonly found in PCs and mobile phones. The result is a great speed increase, comparable to putting an SSD drive in your old computer. That technology is patented for online data storage.

Competitors: EMC, NetApp, Amazon S3 and other online storage solutions.

Secret sauce: Improving read/write speeds is a great challenge for hosting solutions these days, and Nimble is faster than its competitors, yet costs the same. It has received $81.7 million in funding from Sequoia Capital, Accel Partners, Lightspeed Venture Partners and others.

MobileIron

MobileIron is a device management tool for system admins. Now that the BYOD trend is taking over businesses, admins have to find new ways to handle security settings and push mobile apps to employees ? all of this across multiple phones, tablets and operating systems. MobileIron provides a single platform to manage all devices even though most of them are personal devices that employees bring to the workplace.

Competitors: In-house solutions and restrictions, checking security settings one phone at a time or choosing not to care about security.

Secret sauce: MobileIron makes it much easier for system admins to handle custom phone settings. If you convert one system admin, the entire company will switch to MobileIron. Since 2007, it has raised $96.8 million from Sequoia Capital, Storm Ventures and Norwest Venture Partners.

?They are all basically new companies,? says Andreessen, who agreed with many of the ?Cool Kids? choices. ?I think who is not on that list are all the existing companies that sell business software.? And being younger, more agile companies automatically makes them much more interesting. For anyone who?s read my post about SAP buying SuccessFactors, and misunderstood it, it?s not SuccessFactors that was boring (it?s not at all) but SAP ? whose stock performance is positively reflecting its acquisitions of hipper players like SuccessFactors ? itself.

?The joke about SAP has always been, it?s making 50s German manufacturing methodology, implemented in 1960s software technology, delivered to 1970-style manufacturing organizations,? says Andreessen. ?The incumbency ? they are still the lingering hangover from the dot-com crash.?

?We all secretly fear making the same mistakes as previous-generation enterprise software companies ? bloating our products and building out costly sales operations,? says Zendesk?s Svane. ?The new enterprise software companies that avoid these traps will be tomorrow?s winners.?

So I was wrong, at least on a macro level: Perhaps there is no more compelling story in technology today than the David versus Goliath tale of enterprise upheaval. ?Today is the most exciting time in enterprise technology history?? SuccessFactors CEO himself Lars Dalgaard shares, ?and we get to have no excuses for building a delicious user experience for everything we launch. Our benchmark is more delicious looking than Apple, simpler than Twitter.?

And investors, public and private, increasingly agree: Being that we?re in a consumer rut, am I going to be writing about the enterprise for the next two years?

The advantage of the consumer businesses is they tend to be much broader-based with a much larger number of customers and relatively faster adoption patterns. The advantage of the enterprise companies is that they have revenue numbers off the bat if they?re good, and thus they are not as subject to consumer trends, fads or behavior, which is why investors, having raised less money to invest in 2013 in the first place, are being cautious.

?Folks have realized that businesses buy close to $300 billion worth of software ($285 billion according to Gartner in 2012),? says Rosenstein, ?and that companies who exhibit those attributes have the potential to build *very* large businesses. This is compounded by the opportunity to grow very quickly, since the economics of scaling a software business have been forever changed by things like Amazon on the backend, and self-service sales on the frontend.?

?The businesses are good, which is nice,? Andreessen adds, ?and then I think it?s also sector rotation. We talk to a lot of the big hedge funds, mutual funds. It?s really funny. We are talking about big hedge funds, mutual funds ? about six months ago they all started saying, well, you know, we really think there is going to be a rotation from consumer and enterprise and we are going to really get ahead of that. And I am like, yeah, you and 10 other guys in the last two weeks have told me the same thing. It?s like, good job, like you are way out ahead on the leading edge on this.?

You have to give credit to the foresight of the Levies, Bhusris, Svanes of the world who took a bet on enterprise when it wasn?t the new girl in school. And, especially, the Ellisons and Benioffs for building the school. In fact, there is a salacious rumor making the rounds that Levie actually has a picture of Ellison as his iPhone home screen. ?No comment,? he says.

As DFJ partner Andreas Stavropoulos brings up, ?Interestingly, enterprise companies like Box that are gaining traction now were started in 2004-2007 when it wasn?t cool to be enterprise-focused. This shows some of the best innovations happen when most of the market is looking the other way.?

?My running joke has been, it?s like little kids,? says Andreessen. ?Like everybody out of the consumer pool, everybody into the enterprise pool. So everybody out of the wading pool, everybody into the hot tub.?

And right now the enterprise is a pretty hot hot tub.

CRASS OR COMEDIC? Seth MacFarlane's sense of humor has ruffled some feathers but excited some Oscar fans

MANILA, Philippines - Seth MacFarlane, the brains behind ?Family Guy? and the comedy film ?Ted,? will host the 85th Academy Awards on Feb 25, 2013.

He is the latest in the line of stars who have been given the honor of hosting the prestigious and glamorous ceremony. The list includes Billy Crystal (who has hosted 5 times), legends such as Frank Sinatra and Diana Ross, Whoopi Goldberg, Ellen Degeneres, Johnny Carson, and David Letterman.

MacFarlane said, "It's truly an overwhelming privilege to be asked to host the Oscars. My thoughts upon hearing the news were, one, I will do my utmost to live up to the high standards set forth by my predecessors; and two, I hope they don't find out I hosted the Charlie Sheen Roast.?

No stranger to awards himself?having won 2 Emmys for the animated series, ?Family Guy??MacFarlane was brought in by Oscars organizers to attract a younger audience for the revered awards ceremony.

Producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron quip, ?"We are thrilled to have Seth MacFarlane host the Oscars. His performing skills blend perfectly with our ideas for making the show entertaining and fresh. He will be the consummate host, and we are so happy to be working with him.?

MacFarlane made his directorial debut with the 2012 comedy ?Ted,? a film about a 30-something regular Joe (played by Mark Wahlberg) living with his foul-mouthed, pot-smoking teddy bear, voiced by MacFarlane himself.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Residents from Newtown, Conn., are joining a march on Washington for gun control on Saturday with parents, pastors, survivors of gun violence and Education Secretary Arne Duncan.

Organizers said they are expecting thousands of participants for the rally on the National Mall, including about 100 from Newtown and buses from New Jersey, New York and Philadelphia. Others are flying in from Seattle, San Francisco and even Alaska. They will gather Saturday at the Capitol Reflecting Pool at 10 a.m. and will begin marching down Constitution Avenue toward the Washington Monument at 11 a.m. A rally is planned on the monument grounds at noon.

Molly Smith, the artistic director of Washington's Arena Stage, and her partner organized the march, inspired by the December massacre that killed 20 first graders and six teachers at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, she said. The gunman also fatally shot his mother and committed suicide.

"With the drum roll, the consistency of the mass murders and the shock of it, it is always something that is moving and devastating to me. And then, it's as if I move on," Smith said. "And In this moment, I can't move on. I can't move on.

"I think it's because it was children, babies," she said. "I was horrified by it."

While she's never organized a political march before, Smith said she was compelled to press for a change in the law. The march organizers support President Barack Obama's call for a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines as well as for universal background checks for gun sales. They also want lawmakers to require gun safety training for all buyers of firearms.

As a theater person, Smith said murdering a child is something you can never show in theater. Even in the Greek tragedy, "Medea," the main character kills her children, but that happens off stage, Smith said.

After the Connecticut shootings, Smith posted something on Facebook and drew more support to do something. The group One Million Moms for Gun Control, the Washington National Cathedral and two other churches eventually signed on to co-sponsor the march. Organizers have raised more than $46,000 online to pay for equipment and fees to stage the rally.

Lawmakers from the District of Columbia and Maryland are scheduled to speak. Actress Kathleen Turner is expected to appear, along with Marian Wright Edelman of the Children's Defense Fund and Colin Goddard, a survivor from the Virginia Tech massacre.

Smith said she supports a comprehensive look at mental health and violence in video games and films. But she said the mass killings at Virginia Tech and Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn., all start with guns.

"The issue is guns. The Second Amendment gives us the right to own guns, but it's not the right to own any gun," she said. "These are assault weapons, made for killing people."

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? The waves of emotion brought tears, laughs and prayerful reflection Friday as more than 2,000 people gathered to remember five members of a New Mexico family gunned down in their home last weekend.

Following a police escort, fellow chaplains and members of the Albuquerque Fire Department lined the procession for the memorial service held at one of the city's largest churches. Bagpipes played and the urns of former pastor Greg Griego, his wife Sarah and their three young children were carried into the church.

Family members recalled Greg Griego's lumbering walk, his hearty laugh and his endless commitment to helping others to turn their lives around. His wife, known for her cooking, and their children were just as much a part of that ministry. The family was always a front-row fixture at church services.

The crowd prayed for the Griegos and for their 15-year-old son, Nehemiah, who remains in custody after being charged with the killings.

Annette Griego, one of Greg Griego's adult daughters, told those at the service that her father was a man whose heart was after God.

"My dad never gave up on me. He never gave up on any of us. He never stopped giving us Jesus and so I know he would want us to do the exact same thing for our brother, Nehemiah," she said. "So if you wonder where we stand, we stand alongside our brother."

"We stand confident that God will take this tragedy and use it for something good," she said.

News of the slayings has reverberated throughout the community, where Greg Griego ? a former gang member turned pastor ? was known for his work with jail inmates, his service at local rescue missions and his spiritual guidance for firefighters and members of the military.

Friends said Griego and his teenage son went on missions to Mexico and that the boy was a talented drummer who played with the church's youth band.

On Friday, family, friends and members of the Calvary Albuquerque church who watched the boy grow up continued to struggle, trying to make sense of the tragedy.

Nehemiah Griego was just a normal teen to Vince Harrison, a former police officer who had known the family for about 10 years through his security work at the church.

"He did not fit the criteria of a kid who was crazy into guns and wanted to hurt people. That's absolutely false," Harrison said.

The question of how and why such a tragedy could happen to the Griegos haunts family members and fellow churchgoers as lawmakers across the country debate whether more gun control laws would keep another shooting from happening, even though the signs of brewing tragedy are often impossible to spot.

Public defender Jeff Buckels said in a statement that it's too early for anyone to rush to judgment about the teen's mental state, motives or plans. He accused the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department of parceling out limited bits of information that have led to "sensational headlines that threaten to finish Nehemiah's case in the public mind before it has fairly begun."

Sheriff Dan Houston has said he stands by the facts as presented in the investigation.

Griego is facing murder and child abuse charges in the deaths of his parents and three younger siblings ? all found shot to death inside their rural home south of Albuquerque on Jan. 19.

Detectives were at the home for two days collecting evidence. They also have been reviewing text messages and calls between Griego and his 12-year-old girlfriend and security video from Calvary, where the teen apparently spent much of the day following the early morning shootings.

After the killings, authorities allege that Griego reloaded his parents' two semi-automatic rifles and put them in the family van and planned to gun down Wal-Mart shoppers. Houston has said investigators have no information that Griego actually went to a Wal-Mart that day.

Buckels, the defense attorney, promised he will consult with mental health experts and investigate the effects of violent video games. Authorities have said Griego liked to play "Modern Warfare" and "Grand Theft Auto."
