Study Suggests Postponing Retirement Until Age 70 - The ...

The National Retirement Risk Index is a measure of how many American households will be unable to afford the same standard of living during retirement as they did before retirement. According to the most recent update, the Index found 51 percent of pre-retirement households are at risk of being financially unprepared based on readiness to retire at age 65. When the retirement age is raised to 70, however, the number of American households that would be ready for retirement increases to 85 percent. The authors write that the steep improvement in readiness from age 65 through 70 reflects the importance of Social Security and the pattern of its benefit payments. According to the report, Social Security also closes the readiness gap between low-income and high-income households. By age 70, households who rely most heavily on Social Security are nearly as prepared to retire as high-income households. More here and here.

Jets: Learn About Leasing : Corporate Jet Insider

If you?re not quite ready to take the plunge into aircraft ownership, leasing may be an option that works better for your needs.

In an aircraft leasing arrangement, the owner ? or lessor ? retains legal title to the aircraft but transfers possession of the aircraft to the lessee. Because of the broad range of options available, not all aircraft leases will meet the above definition.

A variety of leasing options, each with their advantages and disadvantages, is available.

Leasing benefits
The benefits to a lease structure rather than purchasing a private jet include:

  • The lessor takes tax depreciation ? a benefit passed along to a lessee through low payments and lower implicit interest rates.
  • In most states, sales tax is paid over time through the stream of the low monthly payments instead of up-front, yielding a much lower sales tax liability.
  • Custom leasing provides flexibility for upgrade or early buyout options.
  • True operating leases qualify for off-balance-sheet accounting treatment, providing shareholder sensitivity benefits.
  • Leases provide 100-percent financing in most cases.

Some kinds of leases, such as synthetic or capital leases, have considerably different features from the true operating lease described above, so please confer with your accounting or finance advisor to fully understand each lease product.

Lease financing
When leasing an aircraft, a typical loan term is five to seven years. However, the payments will typically amortize over a much longer schedule, such as 10 to 20 years. This loan structure is created on a mortgage-style note with an end-of-term balloon payment yielding a comfortable payment amortization.

A typical lease term is seven to 10 years. A sophisticated corporate aircraft lessor will be able to customize upgrade or early buyout provisions consistent with your thoughts, preferences and aircraft upgrade plans.

Both floating and fixed interest rates are available if you are considering leasing a private jet. In addition, at times hybrid rate structures are also available. Examples of alternative rate structures include:

  • floating with changes in LIBOR every 30, 60 or 90 days
  • floating with changes in the prime rate or commercial paper
  • fixed annually
  • fixed for a predetermined time (e.g., five years) and then re-set

The best interest rate structure for you depends on the rate climate at the time of your closing as well as the length of time you plan to lease the aircraft. Your aviation lender can offer insight on the interest rate structure best suited to your specific transaction.

Early lease termination
If you decide to end your lease early, the early termination process must involve the cooperation of your lessor to determine:

  • whether the lease offers a specific early termination option at that point in time
  • Fair Market Value (FMV) of the aircraft relative to the Termination Value (TV) of the lease at that point
  • whether an aircraft upgrade or replacement is fostering the early lease termination (which is often the case)

If the FMV is less than the lease TV when the lessee returns the aircraft, the lessee will likely have to make up the difference to the lessor with a lump-sum cash payment.

There?s also another option: Instead of returning the aircraft, the lessee may seek permission from the lessor to market the aircraft. In this case, the lessor agrees to facilitate the sale documentation and closing process. This process is typically used when the lessee is upgrading aircraft with the same lessor.

Key questions to ask
When leasing an aircraft, it is important to select a lessor who can demonstrate a successful history of assisting clients with creative early lease termination solutions. Lessors who have successfully managed corporate aviation assets over the last five to 10 years and are not burdened with multiple nonperforming corporate jets are the most creative, aggressive and helpful lessors.

If you are a first-time aircraft lessee, you should ask these questions about financing to make sure your approach to leasing a private jet is well-planned and strategic:

  • Do you desire to structure aircraft ownership in the name of an operating corporation, a corporate subsidiary, an individual?s name or a special purpose LLC?
  • What individual or company will provide the financial strength for this transaction?
  • Will the aircraft operate according to FAR Part 91 (corporate) or 135 (charter)?
  • How many hours of annual use do you expect?
  • Will you use an internal flight department or an aircraft management company?
  • Will you lease or charter the aircraft to related and/or unrelated parties?

Dodgers sweep rival Giants

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:53 p.m. ET July 29, 2012

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Clayton Kershaw pitched a five-hitter for his second shutout of the season, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants 4-0 Sunday to complete a three-game sweep of the NL West leader.

Luis Cruz drove in two runs, and Matt Kemp, Andre Ethier, James Loney and Mark Ellis had two hits apiece for Los Angeles (56-47), which closed within one percentage point of San Francisco (55-46),

Blanked in a three-game series at San Francisco from June 25-27, Los Angeles outscored the Giants 19-3 in this series and didn't give up a run during the final 20 innings.

San Francisco, which has lost four straight, didn't get a runner past second and managed only three hits in the final seven innings. The Giants were swept at home by the Dodgers for the first time since

June 28-30, 2010.

Kershaw (8-6) struck out seven and walked one in his fifth career shutout, beating the Giants for the first time in three starts this season. He lost both previous outings despite allowing just four earned runs in 14 innings.

He survived a scare in the eighth when Marco Scutaro hit a line drive that ricocheted off the pitcher's glove hand. Ellis, the second baseman, retrieved the ball to make the putout as Kershaw tossed his glove to the ground. He met briefly with a team trainer and manager Don Mattingly on the mound, then struck out Brandon Belt to end the inning.

Kershaw was coming off his worst start this season, when he allowed eight runs in 5 2-3 innings during an 8-2 loss at St. Louis.

Ryan Vogelsong (8-5), who had won both of his prior matchups against Kershaw this year, allowed two runs - one earned - and six hits in six innings with five strikeouts and three walks. He lowered his ERA to a major league-leading 2.22.

Los Angeles went ahead with two runs in the fourth following singles by Juan Rivera and Kemp. With runners at the corners and one out, newly acquired Hanley Ramirez grounded to third and beat second baseman Ryan Theriot's relay throw to avoid a double play as Rivera scored. After Scutaro dropped Loney's popup to third for an error, Cruz hit an RBI double.

Vogelsong struck out Kershaw with the bases loaded to end the sixth. The Dodgers added a pair of runs in the eighth against Jeremy Affeldt following a one-out double by Loney. Cruz and Mark Ellis hit RBI singles.

NOTES: Kershaw pitched a six-hit shutout against St. Louis on May 19. ... Loney is hitting .328 in July (21-for-64). ... The first seven hitters in the Dodgers' batting order all had at least one hit. No. 8 batter A.J. Ellis walked three times. ... Cruz has a career-best 12-game hitting streak that is also the longest by a Dodgers player this season. ... LHP Madison Bumgarner goes for his team-leading 12th win for San Francisco in the series opener against the Mets on Monday. ... Aaron Harang (7-5), knocked out in the fifth inning by Arizona on May 22, starts for the Dodgers in the opener of a three-game set against the Diamondbacks.

Annual Multi Trip and Single Trip Travel Insurance - the Famous ...

cra9u4f0ma Posted by cra9u4f0ma on 13 hours ago

Such a tough issue has appeared in each traveller?s mind at least one time. So, prior to making selection you ought to each time know advantages and drawbacks of both annual multi trip and single trip cover.

What does keep money? Every person tries to save. We all are aware of that it is less expensive by the dozen. So, you must consider and plan in advance in order to save money. If you don?t travel much therefore you doubtless don?t need an annual multi-trip policy. On the other hand, if you are about to travel at least 3 times (e.g. small business visits, working as a volunteer, weekend holidays, collaborating in public and sport events abroad et cetera.) or you have relatives anywhere out of the motherland, whom you desire to go to see repeatedly, you must better think of an annual multi-trip travel insurance. It will definitely cut your costs twice.

What saves time? It is clear that it is quicker to purchase a multi-trip certificate just the once than to get it every single time you want it. It happens that individuals fail to remember the options they have chosen for their previous trip so that they start comparing the information again. Getting annual multi trip cover allows you look through your certificate any time you desire going on your e-mail. As a consequence, you purchase it just the once and stay relaxed the rest of the period.

What is better for different types of actions? It depends on you. It doesn?t matter which type of journey you select, anyway you may perhaps add additional coverage for dangerous activities, personal possessions and other choices. Both of these travel cover are all-round.

What is the difference in the coverage of insurance plans?

Most holiday insurance policies cover up worldwide visits. Still some travel insurance organizations offer nice deals. In particular, when arranging annual multi-trip insurance certificate for certain time you can get winter sports coverage totally free.

What is the age difference? At this time you must be well thought-out and precise. This thing varies depending on each single travel insurance company. On the other hand, single trip travel insurance policies more likely have larger age limit than annual multi-trip insurance policies. Yet there are insurance businesses that propose very good conditions for seniors.

What is vital concerning the travel insurance period?

When arranging any certificate, it is essential to select an immediate date. Otherwise, you won?t be insured for the abandonment of your future journeys. Majority doesn?t consider somewhat might affect their voyage. In spite of this, such cases as strikes may well be the reasons of the tour abandonment in the last days before a departure.

Accordingly, again, remember, planning is really vital. Understand that buying annual multi-trip travel insurance certificate more likely save your time, money and offer you some good deals. So, make an effort to be conscious to win, not to lose.

We recommend that you pick an immediate start date because this will ensure that you are insured for the cancellation of any pre-booked travel. Or else, if you select the departure date of your earliest travel and you ought to cancel prior to your departure, you will not be covered.

American nuns will meet in St Louis next week to consider their response to a Vatican report which questioned their doctrinal loyalty.

The New York Times reports that the assembly of nuns will decide how to act in wake of the scathing critique issued in the Spring.

President of the Leadership Conference Sister Pat Farrell told the paper that the Vatican seems to regard questioning as defiance, while the sisters see it as a form of faithfulness.

She said: ?We have a differing perspective on obedience. Our understanding is that we need to continue to respond to the signs of the times, and the new questions and issues that arise in the complexities of modern life are not something we see as a threat.?

The paper also quotes the former head of the church?s doctrinal office, Cardinal William J. Levada.

He met with the nuns? leaders in June, just before he retired, and said afterwards that they should regard his office?s harsh assessment as "an invitation to obedience."

At the time, Cardinal Levada said: ?I admire religious men and women. But if they aren?t people who believe and express the faith of the church, the doctrines of the church, then I think they?re misrepresenting who they are and who they ought to be.

The gathering of the nuns will decide whether or not to cooperate with the three bishops appointed by the Vatican to supervise the overhaul of their organization.

The Leadership Conference of Women Religious represents about 80 percent of women?s Catholic religious orders in the United States.

The report says that the Leadership Conference is: ?Considering at least six options that range from submitting graciously to the takeover to forming a new organization independent of Vatican control, as well other possible courses of action that lie between those poles."

Church scholars told the paper that the power struggle between the nuns and the Vatican has been "building for decades."

The report states that at issue are: ?Questions of obedience and autonomy, what it means to be a faithful Catholic and different understandings of the Second Vatican Council.?

In response, the nuns have claimed their loyalty to Vatican II.

Sister Janice Farnham, a retired professor of church history at the Boston College School of Theology and Ministry, said: ?We were the ones who probably took Vatican II and ran the fastest and the farthest with it.

?Sometimes our church leaders forget, we were tasked to do these things by the church. The church said jump, and we said, how high?

?The church said update, renew, go back to your sources, and we did it as best we could. We did it with a passion, and we paid dearly.?

More than 63 percent of the continental U.S. is in some stage of drought, a portion unseen since the Drought Monitor started 1999.

Illinois is one of the hardest hit states. It saw its percentage of land in extreme or exceptional drought balloon from 8 percent last week to roughly 71 percent this week.

Memolane: Highlight Social Content With New Embed Features And WordPress Plugin

Memolane LogoMemolane, a startup that helps users archive and explore their content across social networks, has been working to make it easier to share that content, for example by allowing users to share "lanes" with their Facebook friends. Now, founder Eric Lagier says publishers, brands, and anyone else should have an easy time featuring that content on their own websites, through an improved embed feature and WordPress plugin. When someone signs up for Memolane, they connect the social network accounts of their choice, then the site creates a single timeline highlighting the content from all of those accounts. (One of the more fun features, though less relevant for this article, is the fact that Memolane sends you emails reminding you what you were doing a few months or a year ago.) You can also create lanes around specific events or topics by filtering based on tags or dates.

How To Tackle Your Own Home Improvement Projects | michael kors

Posted on | July 22, 2012 | Comments Off

Create a catching focal point in your living room or hallway by hanging a collection of mismatched silver serving trays. They not only add an interesting extra to your home, but they are mighty fun to collect. Go to flea markets, antique stores or second hand shops, to find the most interesting trays you can display.

There are many tax credits that you can get as a home owner for energy saving improvements. Do some research, find out what they are and go for it. You will not only be increasing the value of your home but you will also be saving yourself on unneeded tax liability.

When painting your home, use neutral colors. Neutral colors will help you portray more space. To increase the amount of space that your room looks like it has, you can add broader, bigger baseboards. Both of these options can be done for a low price and will improve the look of your home.

Installing new countertops is a great place to start with a home improvement project. There are many things to consider, though. Your kitchen layout and how you use your counter space. Do you need something professional and durable or would you prefer something that is more appealing to the eye?

To save money on home maintenance, check all of your faucets and pipes for leaks and have them repaired quickly. Leaking faucets can waste quite a bit of water, costing you in higher bills. Also, pipes that are leaking within your walls or under your house can lead to serious water damage.

Make sure you have a thorough understanding of your home improvement projects. This prevents you from underestimating the cost involved or the time necessary to complete a project. By making a list of the necessary steps and materials, you can ensure you are well-prepared, and you can also use the list to seek a second opinion to avoid missing any steps or overlooking any potential road blocks or complications.

When trying to decide on a big-ticket home improvement project, such as new counter tops, choose a design that is durable and timeless. Leave the trendy colors and funky designs for your furniture and paint colors, which are easier to change, if you tire of them or decide to sell.

To increase the value of your home, make some home improvements. The projects do not have to be time consuming or expensive. Start small with a job like laying new tile or vinyl in the bathroom. Once you are finished, you will think you have a whole new bathroom.

Use carpet samples to carpet a whole room! Retail stores often throw away their samples. Cut each sample up into smaller pieces and tack or glue them into place for free floor covering. Cut them in identically sized pieces for a tile effect or cut them in irregular geometric shapes for an abstract look.

When it comes to home improvement, it is important to realize that the more customized your have, the less likely it will be appreciated by your future buyers. If you are concerned about the resale value of your house, it is important to appeal to the general public as opposed to your own tastes.

Here is a great tip to get rid of mineral build up in faucets. Simply create a mixture of lemon juice and vinegar and soak the head of the faucet in the mixture. The mixture will dissolve the mineral build up and eliminate any hard water that may be coming through the faucet head.

As stated in the beginning of the article, there are many easy projects that even a novice can master. After reading this article, hopefully you have a new-found confidence in your abilities to tackle some home-improvement projects on your own. It will make you feel proud at the end of the day, seeing your very own handy work!

Navy: Sub worker set fire so he could leave early

(AP) ? A civilian employee set a fire that caused $400 million in damage to a nuclear-powered submarine because he had anxiety and wanted to get out of work early, Navy investigators said in a complaint filed Monday.

Casey James Fury, 24, of Portsmouth, N.H., faces up to life in prison if convicted of two counts of arson in the fire aboard the USS Miami attack submarine while it was in dry dock May 23 and a second blaze outside the sub on June 16.

Fury was taking medications for anxiety and depression and told investigators he set the fires so he could get out of work, according a seven-page affidavit filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Portland.

If convicted of either charge, Fury could face life imprisonment and a fine of up to $250,000 and be ordered to pay restitution, officials said. His federal public defender, David Beneman, declined to comment. A court appearance was set for Monday afternoon.

The Miami was in dry dock at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery, Maine, for an overhaul when the fire damaged the torpedo room and command area inside the forward compartment. It took more than 12 hours to extinguish.

A second fire was reported June 16 on the dry dock cradle on which the Miami rests, but there was no damage and no injuries.

Fury, who was working on the sub as a painter and sandblaster, initially denied starting the fires but eventually acknowledged his involvement, the affidavit states.

He admitted setting the May 23 fire, which caused an estimated $400 million in damage, while taking a lie-detector test and being told by the examiner he wasn't being truthful.

Fury told Timothy Bailey, an agent for the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, that "his anxiety started getting really bad," so he grabbed his cigarettes and a lighter, walked up to a bunk room and set fire to some rags on the top bunk.

The Navy originally said the fire started when an industrial vacuum cleaner sucked up a heat source that ignited debris inside.

Fury said he set the second fire after getting anxious over a text-message exchange with an ex-girlfriend about a man she had started seeing, according to the affidavit. He wanted to leave work early, so he took some alcohol wipes and set them on fire outside the submarine.

Fury said he initially lied about setting the fires "because he was scared and because everything was blurry to him and his memory was impacted due to his anxiety and the medication he was taking at the time," according to the affidavit.

Fury told NCIS agent Jeremy Gauthier that he was taking three medications for anxiety, depression and sleep, and a fourth for allergies. He checked himself into an in-patient mental health facility on June 21 and checked himself out two days later, the affidavit reads.

INNOVATIVE BUSINESSES FIND THEIR STRIDE | Massive Magazine

MASSEY UNIVERSITY?S ECENTRE PLAYED HOST to the ?Startup Weekend? business innovation event on the weekend of 15 June at the Albany Innovation Campus.

The event was sold out, with nearly 90 people pitching business ideas. Some 12 groups then formed around the 12 best-received ideas, and the 54-hour marathon to create a Startup business was on.

Many ideas were based on social media and mobile apps. The weekend was also trending on Twitter and a simultaneous Startup Weekend was streaming live from San Diego. It was truly a social media event.

Event organiser Jessica Gillon said beforehand that drama was expected. By Saturday morning tension was already starting to build, with some team members even defecting to other groups.

However, groups then re-established with their new members and activity was running smoothly once more.

Mentors were also available to help direct the different groups. The mentors had training and success in areas such as marketing, business, and law. Mentors were both physically present, as well as virtually, with entrepreneurs available via Skype from San Diego, Copenhagen, Trondheim, Washington DC, and Fes.

Businesses were then pitched again before lunch on Saturday. The new pitches, based on the 12 original pitches, were more purposeful and defined. Group members had a clearer direction on what they wanted to achieve.

Groups were then left to continue with development, customer validation, and further mentoring throughout the afternoon.

Updates were given on the Saturday night, with business prototypes made, and even some customers already acquired. Head Coach and co-organiser Alan Froggatt said teams were ?on timeline? and ?settled?. This continued well into the night with one team operating until past 3am despite the venue being closed at 1am.

A hitch on Saturday night saw the lighting go out while groups were still operating. This didn?t seem to deter operations, though, as everybody seemed to be in high spirits.

Sunday morning provided the final countdown for the weekend.

Global Facilitator and co-organiser Dave Moskovitz said that everybody was ?under tremendous pressure and responding really, really well?. The teams? ideas were ?outstanding?, and with help from the mentors to ?crack the whip?, the teams worked hard and well to create viable business plans and products.

On the Sunday afternoon, teams finalised plans, products, and presentations in preparation for the judging panel that night. The panel consisted of four New Zealand business gurus: Candace Kinser, CEO of NZICT; Nick Gerritsen, Owner at Cripstart Ltd; Brett Roberts, CEO of Wharf42; and Misti Landtroop, Country General Manager at Pitney Bowes.

After all 12 teams presented their ideas for innovative businesses, the panel deliberated for a long time.

Coach and co-organiser Mike Zeff felt that due to the quality and potential of each presentation, it would be a ?tough call for the judges?.

In the end, the winning team was SmileToday.co, an innovative charity business with a social entrepreneurship aspect. First prize included a space on the ecentre sprint programme (valued at $4500), an MYOB start-up services package (valued at $1000), a StartupPack? of legal services from Lowdnes Jordan (valued at $2000), and a $500 cash prize on company formation.Following the Startup Weekend, 12 potential businesses were formed, with four receiving prizes to ensure their formation and continuation.

Local Pet Food Options: How Your Dog's Meals Can Be Eco-Friendly

From Earth911's Mary Mazzoni:

Choosing locally-produced products comes with troves of benefits: Shrinking your carbon footprint, supporting local industry and accessing top-quality goods. But you?re not the only one in the house that can become a locavore. Your pet can go local, too!

Last week, we polled Earth911 readers to find out if they chose locally-sourced pet food for their four-legged friends. In the interest of full disclosure, our informal homepage poll is more of a just-for-fun question than a scientific survey. But nevertheless, we were a bit surprised by what we found. After five days, a mere 3 percent of respondents said they opted for local pet food.

We couldn?t help but wonder why our community of readers, who tend to prefer locally-produced products for themselves, didn?t go local when it came to pet food. After much deliberation, we concluded that the answer is simple: most people simply don?t know that local pet food resources exist in their area.

If you?re surprised to learn that the same principles of living and eating locally can also apply to your pet, Earth911 is here to give you the run-down on all of your options ? and, believe it or not, there are many.

Greenies looking to help their furry friends go local can purchase pet food made from locally-sourced ingredients at co-ops, have it delivered to their homes through Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs or make their own pet-friendly grub using local ingredients. A growing number of restaurants will even allow you to eat out with your pet in tow.

To find out which local pet food option is right for you, check out our quick and easy guide ? chock-full of useful tidbits that will help you make an informed decision.

Our local pet food guide:

A growing number of start-up companies and small businesses devoted to producing all-local pet food are springing up across the country. A quick Web search with your town?s name and the words ?local pet food? should help you track down a few. But if you?re looking for a wider selection, you may want to consider stopping by a cooperative grocery store (aka co-op) in your area that sells local pet food.

Check out this handy state-by-state guide from the nonprofit Organic Consumers Association (OCA) to find a co-op in your community that carries local pet food. Some co-ops are devoted exclusively to selling food for pets and livestock, while others sell pet-friendly options alongside local produce and other conventional grocery picks. The OCA list also includes health and natural foods stores, but you may save some cash through membership discounts if you opt for a co-op instead.

A Reader Asks: Earth911 Answers: How Can I Green My Kitty?

Most local pet food you?ll find at co-ops is raw ? which may sound a little icky at first, but some veterinarians say a raw diet is actually better for your pet?s health. According to the Healthy Pet Journal, an online resource compiled by experienced vet and Cornell School of Veterinary Medicine graduate Larry Siegler, raw food diets can help pets deal with problems such as flea infestations, hot spots, continual shedding, poor dental and gum health, allergies and gastro-intestinal issues. Additionally, your pets? short intestinal tracts are actually better suited for consuming raw foods.

Raw pet food also tends to carry a much lighter environmental footprint than commercial foods, as producing pet food at large factories requires a substantial amount of energy, water and chemical additives.

Talk to your veterinarian before putting your pet on a raw food diet. He or she will help you decide which raw foods will provide your pets with the nutrients they need. Also, ask your vet if you should take any additional precautions when cleaning up after your pet, as some research shows that pet feces may become contaminated with more harmful bacteria if fed raw food diets instead of commercial foods.

Choose A CSA
csa

In a Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program, members sign up for individual subscriptions to a farm or small group of farms for the length of a growing season. In return, local growers provide a bag or box of seasonal produce and other farm products each week.

Some CSA shares only include produce, while others contain additional items like meat, eggs, dairy and prepared farm products. Many of these diversified CSAs are also beginning to offer local pet food to members as demand for healthier pet food rises nationwide.

Like the choices found at co-ops, most local pet food offered by CSAs is raw. The idea of feeding your pet uncooked food may sound a little gross, but some veterinarians say raw diets are actually better for your furry friend?s health and can ward against common ailments. For the health of you and your pet, talk to your vet before switching to a raw food diet.

More Eco Pet Care: Best Green Products for Your Pet

To find out if a CSA in your neighborhood offers local pet food, start by browsing a list of programs in your area. Use LocalHarvest?s state-by-state CSA directory to track down programs near you, and call a few in your community to ask if they offer raw, local pet food to members.

For best results, only call local CSAs that provide meat and dairy products and allow members to customize their weekly shipments (some programs ship the same box out to every member each week).

Note that while the local pet food trend is growing in CSAs, many programs do not offer this service to members. If the CSAs in your area do not offer local pet food, ask them to let you know if they add this service in the future, and try another option on our list in the meantime.

Make Your Own
make your own

Sure, you can purchase local and raw pet food from co-ops and CSAs. But if DIY is more your style, you can also whip up a batch of pet-friendly food right in your own kitchen using local ingredients.

DIY pet foods will differ greatly depending on the size and breed of your furry friend. Generally, raw dog food contains a combination of raw meat, vegetables and whole grains. Since cats are strictly carnivores and their stomachs aren?t well-suited for digesting grains and veggies, raw meat and organ meat are usually the main ingredients in raw cat food.

Talk to a veterinarian before putting your pet on a raw food diet. He or she will determine the ingredients that are best for your pet?s medical and nutritional needs. If possible, try to find a vet that advocates raw food diets to ensure he or she is well-versed in the subject and can provide you with detailed advice.

Don?t Miss: Reusable Cat Litter Made From Recycled Tires

In many cases, your vet will work with you to develop a specific recipe that?s right for your pet. For further guidance, check out these tips, sample recipes and do?s and don?ts on raw cat food and raw dog food from EthicalFoods.com.

Note that DIY pet diets are not for the squeamish. For meat ingredients, you?ll not only have to handle common cuts like shanks and shoulders but also slightly more, shall we say, exotic components like heart, liver and other organs. Remember to always use safe food handling procedures, and store finished pet food in the fridge or freezer to keep it from spoiling.

If you notice any changes to your pet?s health or behavior after switching to a raw diet, consult a veterinarian immediately just to be on the safe side.

Follow the money in NASA's space race

NASA provides a quick look at its current and future human spaceflight activities.

By Alan Boyle

NASA is closing out one chapter in the multibillion-dollar effort to create new fleets of spaceships, and getting ready to open the next one. Sometime in the next month or two, the space agency will pick up to three teams of companies to receive hundreds of millions of dollars worth of funding for their spaceship development efforts. That's a lot of money?? but it's important to keep all those expenditures in perspective.

As an accompaniment to this week's series of commentaries about the commercial space race, here's a guide to what's gone on before and what's coming up:

Cargo transports
NASA's push to commercialize transportation services to low Earth orbit began in 2006, a couple of years after the White House decided that the space shuttle fleet had to be retired, when SpaceX and Rocketplane Kistler were awarded almost half a billion dollars to support the development of robotic cargo spacecraft capable of resupplying the space station in the post-shuttle era. "If it doesn't work, I've frankly made the wrong bet," said Mike Griffin, who was NASA's administrator at the time.

In Rocketplane Kistler's case, the bet didn't pay off. NASA paid the company $32.1 million, but Rocketplane failed to win enough private backing to keep going. The company lost its NASA funding and ended up declaring bankruptcy. Orbital Sciences Corp. was selected as a replacement.

With May's successful demonstration flight of the Dragon cargo capsule, SpaceX has virtually completed all its objectives for the Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program, or COTS. It should soon get the last of the $396 million in COTS money that NASA has set aside for the company. Orbital Sciences, meanwhile, is gearing up for key flight tests of its Antares rocket and Cygnus capsule, and at last report has received $266.5 million of its $288 million in COTS money.

Even as the development program nears its end, SpaceX and Orbital are getting ready to begin routine cargo flights to the space station under a follow-on program known as Commercial Resupply Services, or CRS. SpaceX is due to get $1.6 billion for 12 flights scheduled through 2015, while Orbital gets $1.9 billion for eight flights. Citing NASA figures, NBC News' Jay Barbree says SpaceX and Orbital have each received $337.6 million in preparation for the CRS flights.

May 31: SpaceX's Dragon cargo craft returns to Earth from the International Space Station.

Space taxis
So far, we've been talking about unmanned flights to the space station, but NASA also needs U.S. spaceships capable of carrying astronauts to and from the station. Because these "space taxis" will be carrying people rather than mere stuff, the safety standards will have to be higher than they are for cargo craft. In 2010, NASA started setting aside funds to support the development of such spacecraft by private-sector partners. In the first phase of the program, NASA awarded $50 million to five companies for work on future spaceships or safety systems: $3.7 million to Blue Origin, $18 million to the Boeing Co., $1.4 million to Paragon Space Development Corp., $20 million to Sierra Nevada Corp., and $6.7 million to United Launch Alliance.

Last year, four companies won funding for the development of potential crew vehicles: SpaceX is getting $75 million for work on a crew-capable version of the Dragon. Boeing is getting $112.9 million for its CST-100 capsule. Sierra Nevada is getting $105.6 million for its Dream Chaser space plane, and Blue Origin is getting $22 million for its Orbital Space Vehicle. Three other companies are getting technical advice from NASA, but no money. Those three are ATK, Excalibur Almaz and United Launch Alliance.

Over the past few weeks, NASA has been making a string of announcements to the effect that the companies are meeting their milestones for the current phase of development. Just this week, for instance, the space agency said that it's wrapped up reviews with ATK and United Launch Alliance.

The next phase of the program will extend until May 2014. During this phase ??known as Commercial Crew Integrated Capability, or CCiCap?? NASA is expected to provide support for up to three teams that are offering complete systems for human spaceflight, including the launch vehicle, the space taxi and the infrastructure for ground and recovery operations. "By the end of the base period, you need to have an integrated design that you have talked with the government about," Ed Mango, program manager for NASA's Commercial Crew Program, told me.

Mango said NASA will announce who gets the CCiCap money sometime in the next 30 to 60 days. Exactly how much money is at stake? Mango won't say until the announcement is made, in part because negotiations are in progress. Each of the teams in the competition was asked to submit a confidential proposal for $300 million to $500 million in support, but NASA has been working with the teams to pare down the price tags if possible.

"It's similar to if you want modifications done to your house," Mango explained. "You can either buy the estimate as is, or you can negotiate on that estimate."?

Boeing

An artist's conception shows Boeing's CST-100 crew capsule approaching the International Space Station. The CST-100 is one of several "space taxis" being developed for potential use by NASA.

Last month, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden and Rep. Frank Wolf, R-Va., worked out a deal under which two teams would get a full award, while a third backup team would get a partial award. The Obama administration requested $830 million for CCiCap in fiscal 2013, but it looks as if Congress is instead focusing on a funding level around $525 million.

The 2013 funding will be supplemented by extra money that NASA has been holding onto in the current fiscal year, as well as funding yet to be proposed for fiscal 2014, Mango said.

"The plan in fiscal year 2012, when we put our budget together, was always to use a large amount of the funds from fiscal year 2012 to be used for the next activity," he said. "There are hundreds of millions of dollars for FY12 that we will be putting into CCiCap once CCiCap is awarded."

There may be bonuses as well. "We have asked companies to give us optional milestones that we may or may not approve on the government side, that will bring each of the partners all the way through a crew demonstration mission," Mango said.

He doesn't any U.S. commercial spaceship to be ready to fly astronauts by mid-2014. "The state of the industry today is not ready to go through that in that amount of time," he said. But if a team is nearing the point at which it can send people safely into space ? say, in 2015 or 2016???there'd be an incentive for them to go for the optional milestone as part of the CCiCap phase of the program.

SpaceX and Boeing, as well as the team behind the Liberty launch system (which includes ATK, Astrium and Lockheed Martin), have said they could have their spacecraft ready for manned flights by late 2015, assuming that adequate funding is available. Sierra Nevada Corp. has said the Dream Chaser could send people into orbit in 2016, and Blue Origin is aiming for a similar time frame.

NASA wants to have U.S. commercial vehicles flying to the space station by 2017. In the meantime, the space agency will be paying the Russians as much as $63 million a seat for orbital rides. The teams vying for CCiCap money say they can beat that price. SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell, for example, has been quoted as saying the target launch price for crewed Dragon flights is $140 million, which works out to $20 million per seat for seven astronauts.

Mango emphasized that flying astronauts into space isn't just a question of dollars and cents: "Our No. 1 mission is to create a safe capability," he said.

He also noted that the Commercial Crew Program had two "separate but equal" goals.?"We have a public need to create a U.S. capability to get folks to low Earth orbit ... and to the International Space Station," he said. The first goal could conceivably encompass scientific research flights or voyages to private-sector space station, while the second goal is focused specifically on NASA's obligation to support space station operations through at least 2020.

"It's similar to when you look for a car," Mango said. "You buy a car, and then you decide where you want to go with it."

Exploration vehicles
When you count up all the money that NASA has set aside for commercial spaceships, the total comes to several billion dollars over the course of several years. That may sound like a lot of money, but it's far less than what's being spent on NASA's more ambitious effort to build space vehicles for exploration beyond Earth orbit.

As of 2010, roughly $10 billion was spent on Constellation, NASA's now-canceled project to send astronauts back to the moon. Another $2.5 billion was allocated to close out the Constellation contracts. The expenditures included $455 million for a?suborbital Ares 1-X test flight?that wasn't followed up on, and?$500 million for the construction of an Ares 1 Mobile Launcher that was never used and now sits idle at NASA's Kennedy Space Center.

That launch platform could still get a workout from the Liberty launch system, which incorporates elements of the Ares 1 rocket. It could also serve as the liftoff point for NASA's Space Launch System, a heavy-lift rocket that's being developed to send astronauts to a near-Earth asteroid in the mid-2020s, and perhaps to Mars and its moons sometime in the 2030s.

Sept. 14, 2011: NASA unveils the design of its next-generation rocket.

Last year, Congress and the White House agreed on a plan that calls for spending $18 billion on the SLS rocket and the Orion multipurpose crew vehicle through 2017. That's when the first unmanned test flight is scheduled. About $10 billion would go to designing and building the rocket; $6 billion would go to the Orion development effort, led by Lockheed Martin; and the other $2 billion would go to launch pad construction at Kennedy Space Center.?

After 2017, NASA projects that spending on SLS and Orion would amount to $3 billion a year, with the first crewed launch scheduled to take place in 2021. The further out you go, the squishier the numbers get.

The initial rocket flights would be powered by shuttle-style RS-25 engines, plus an updated Saturn-style J-2X for the upper stage, plus an extended version of the solid-rocket boosters that were used on the space shuttle. Last week, NASA announced that four companies were in the running to share $200 million in funding for the development of heftier SLS boosters.

In coming years, new rockets such as SpaceX's Falcon Heavy?will probably be in the mix as well, and may even be flying commercial payloads to the moon and Mars.?It'll be interesting to see how the next chapters of the spaceship saga play out. Lenovo CEO spreads the wealth, distributes his $3 million bonus to lower level employees

Lenovo CEO spreads the wealthThe list of CEOs and other execs in the US that have accepted multi-million dollar bonuses for lording over the crash and burn of a company (or even an entire economy) is staggering. And we can guarantee you that most of that money went towards fancy cars and golden toilet seats. Lenovo's Yang Yuanqing, on the other hand, received a sizable $3 million bonus for actually being good at his job. The additional bonus was a reward for steering the company to record shipments and profits despite a weakening PC market. And what did Mr. Yuanqing do with that money? He gave it back to his employees. That second bonus was broken down into 10,000 discrete chunks and dispersed to line workers, assistants and other lower-level employees. I think that officially makes Yang Yuanqing our new favorite CEO in tech.
