US faces surge of new vets seeking disability

America's newest veterans are filing for disability benefits at a historic rate, claiming to be the most medically and mentally troubled generation of former troops in US history. The troubled economy may be a factor.

A staggering 45 percent of the 1.6 million veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are now seeking compensation for injuries they say are service-related. That is more than double the estimate of 21 percent who filed such claims after the Gulf War in the early 1990s, top government officials told The Associated Press.

What's more, these new veterans are claiming eight to nine ailments on average, and the most recent ones over the last year are claiming 11 to 14. By comparison, Vietnam veterans are currently receiving compensation for fewer than four, on average, and those from World War II and Korea, just two.

IN PICTURES:?Memorial Day: remembering the fallen

It's unclear how much worse off these new veterans are than their predecessors. Many factors are driving the dramatic increase in claims ? the weak economy, more troops surviving wounds, and more awareness of problems such as concussions and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Almost one-third have been granted disability so far.

Government officials and some veterans' advocates say that veterans who might have been able to work with certain disabilities may be more inclined to seek benefits now because they lost jobs or can't find any. Aggressive outreach and advocacy efforts also have brought more veterans into the system, which must evaluate each claim to see if it is war-related. Payments range from $127 a month for a 10 percent disability to $2,769 for a full one.

As the U.S. commemorates the more than 6,400 troops who died in post-Sept. 11, 2001 wars, the problems of those who survived also draw attention. These new veterans are seeking a level of help the government did not anticipate, and for which there is no special fund set aside to pay.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is mired in backlogged claims, but "our mission is to take care of whatever the population is," said Allison Hickey, the VA's undersecretary for benefits. "We want them to have what their entitlement is."

The 21 percent who filed claims in previous wars is Hickey's estimate of an average for the 1990-91 Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield to oust Iraqi troops from Kuwait. The VA has details only on the current disability claims being paid to veterans of each war.

The AP spent three months reviewing records and talking with doctors, government officials and former troops to take stock of the new veterans. They are different in many ways from those who fought before them.

More are from the Reserves and National Guard ? 28 percent of those filing disability claims ? rather than career military. Reserves and National Guard made up a greater percentage of troops in these wars than they did in previous ones. About 31 percent of Guard/Reserve new veterans have filed claims compared to 56 percent of career military ones.

LG Optimus UI 3.0 for Android ICS detailed, will come with Voice Shutter and Quick Memo

LG will put its upcoming high-end phones the LG Optimus 4X HD and the LG Optimus LTE II in line with the times not only in hardware, but in software too, and we already reported to you some of the new features in their interfaces.Now we get an official name for the revamped interface for LG's Android Ice Cream Sandwich phones, and it is... hold tight... LG Optimus UI 3.0! The stroke of marketing genius that brought us the naming scheme actually has its finger on the pulse of the competition, as the new interface brings it up to speeds with the likes of HTC Sense 4.0 in the One series, and the TouchWiz Nature UX in the Galaxy S III.

You will be able to unlock the phone from anywhere on the screen and go directly into the camera, which will have zero shutter lag, Burst and Best shot functions, the ability to take pictures while shooting video, and the rest of the goodies that come with the ICS camera API.

LG, however, is adding its own unique twist, with the inclusion of Voice Shutter, which can take a picture or start filming at a predetermined voice command like "Cheese", for instance. Should be handy for those who always end up capturing the party moments instead of being in front of the lens.?

An interesting introduction is the Quick Memo function, which is one of those "aha" moments - you will be able to scribble something on any screen quickly with your finger as a reminder. There is also the option to customize the Android icons, placing your own face, or any pic you'd like in the menu for a more personalized?experience. Now the only thing left is for the first quad-core phone announced - the LG Optimus 4X HD - to hit shelves next month.

LG?S NEW OPTIMUS UI 3.0 ADDS NEW FEATURES AND FUNCTIONS WHILE BEING UNOBTRUSIVE AND SIMPLE

New User Interface Makes the LG Smartphone Experience Faster, Simpler, More Convenient ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ??

SEOUL, May 16, 2012 ? LG Electronics (LG) is introducing a new User Interface (UI) for its newest Android Ice Cream Sandwich devices, aptly named Optimus UI 3.0. Optimus UI 3.0 brings with it an array of enhanced key features, including Quick Memo? and unique unlock functions, among other new features and functions aimed at improving LG smartphone experience.

?With smartphone hardware becoming more and more similar, it?s important for manufacturers to differentiate their products from the competition through the user interface,? said Dr. Jong-seok Park, President and CEO of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company. ?Both carriers and customers tell us that they want LG phones to look and feel unique and the UI plays a big part in that. LG is really going to push the boundaries of what is possible in user interfaces starting with Optimus UI 3.0.?

Optimus UI 3.0 is designed with convenience and speed in mind. A powerful memo function called Quick Memo? enables users to jot notes on the screen using a finger. Quick Memo? in Optimus UI 3.0 allows users to share their thoughts through social networks, text messages and e-mails more conveniently than ever before.

Other new features include:

-- the ability to unlock the phone by dragging anywhere on the screen;
-- a new Pattern Lock that allows users to preset the most frequently used function, such as the camera, which automatically opens once the phone is unlocked;
-- a simpler version of Optimus UI 3.0 for new smartphone users which organizes the main applications so that they are the easiest to access;
-- a new Voice Shutter that allows users to capture photos using only voice commands;
-- a special camera feature that enables users to pick up the best shot among multiple images including the moment just before the shutter button is depressed;
-- an Icon Customizer that provides an additional level of personalization by allowing users to set their own photos as icons and shortcut images;
-- the addition of a Download category to the menu for easier organization.

Optimus UI 3.0 will debut on the LG Optimus LTE II launching this week in Korea, followed by LG Optimus 4X HD in June. ?

Show your ability to change the world ? Business Management ...

Roughly 85% of MBA graduates believe that ?business people are well-qualified to solve the most pressing problems of the world,? according to the Passion & Purpose MBA survey.

So, what does that mean for you? Those bright, young men and women want to work for leaders who share their passion for changing the world. One of their top three reasons for choosing a workplace is ?opportunity to im??pact the world.?

Here?s how to demonstrate to your team that you?re a visionary:

1. Articulate your purpose. It?s your company?s compass. Facebook?s mission is ?to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.? What?s yours?

2. Remember that entrepreneurial spirit is ageless. When Bernie Marcus and Arthur Blank started Home Depot in 1978, they were 34 and 48 years old, respectively. If you?ve been viewing entrepreneurship as a young person?s game, shift your thinking.

3.? Seek mentorship to maintain your focus. The best leaders do. Once, when Starbucks? Howard Schultz was on vacation in Hawaii, he ran into Michael Dell, and the two ended up taking a three-hour bike ride along the Kona coast. Dell advised Schultz on how the then-struggling company could handle Wall Street.

4. Don?t be afraid to experiment. Many world-changing entrepreneurs start with a small idea and grow with it. They don?t start big. Richard Branson sold records out of his car?s trunk.

HTC One XL now available in Australia from Mobicity

Android Central

Aussie carrier Telstra, may have delayed its own launch of the HTC One XL, but that doesn't mean our Australian friends are completely out of luck. Enter third-party retailer Mobicity, which is now stocking the One XL regardless.

The One XL of course is the non AT&T, Snapdragon S4 powered variant of HTC's flagship device. Available in black only, the One XL will work on all Australian 3G/HSPA networks, as well as the 1800MHz LTE network offered by Telstra. (And if anyone's thinking of importing, the One XL also supports European LTE networks on 2600MHz bands.)

Pricing is set at AUS$850, and the phone is available right now.

Plastic Logic demoes flexible color display for e-readers (video)

Plastic Logic has getting by with some eastern love since last year, when RUSNANO's $700 million investment helped the e-reader maker land its Plastic Logic 100 in Russian schools. The latest fruit of that partnership is a prototype of its first flexible color e-reader display, which delivers 4,000-plus hues at a resolution of 75 ppi. The screen contains some 1.2 million plastic transistors, and it's able to bend without distorting images thanks to a top filter and a 150-ppi display below that flex at the same rate. Skip past the break for a demo clip of the tech in action, appropriately featuring some Matryoshka dolls.

ASUS Padfone video reminds us it's a phone, tablet, laptop and stylus

Android Central

One of the more memorable moments of this year's Mobile World Congress involved ASUS Chairman Jonney Shih unveiling the multitude of components that make up the ASUS Padfone. The Padfone, if you'll remember, starts off as an Android 4.0 phone, which you can then plug into a tablet dock to transform into an Android tablet. Then, in typical ASUS transformer style, adding the keyboard dock gives you an Android laptop. And then there's the capacitive stylus which also doubles as as a headset. Because hey, why not?

We got to meet the Padfone a couple of months back in Barcelona (and we've got words and video to prove it), but today ASUS has published one of the promotional videos first unveiled at its MWC press conference. There's a complete rundown of all the Padfone's features, along with specs and details of exactly how much batter life the entire package delivers. Connect the phone to the tablet, then the tablet to the keyboard dock, and ASUS says you'll get up to 102 hours of use.

There's no word on any official release date just yet, but we've got the video embedded after the break to whet your appetite.

Jawbone Big Jambox

Last year, headset vet Jawbone stepped into the wireless speaker market with the Jambox ($199.99, 3.5 stars), a portable Bluetooth speaker that doubles as a speakerphone accessory. Now, the company is taking the idea and making it bigger with the Big Jambox ($299.99 direct), a larger, heavier, and more-powerful speaker. For $100 more, it bumps the Jambox up from a good portable personal speaker to one that could easily drive a small party or handle a conference call for a large group. The sound quality isn't quite as clear and robust as what you get with the Editors' Choice Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker ($299.95, 4 stars), but a long battery life and a handy speakerphone feature make the Big Jambox a top choice if you're looking for a wireless speaker to take with you.

Design
Like the Jambox before it, the Big Jambox is a blocky brick of a speaker. It measures 3.6 by 10.1 by 3.2 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.2 pounds, dwarfing the Jambox 's 6.0 by 2.2 by 1.6 inches and 12 ounces. (In the photo below, the original Jambox is on the left.) Available in red, black, or white, the speaker is surrounded by a metal grille, and slightly rubberized panels on the left and right sides help protect it in transit. It features most of its controls on its top side, including Playback and Volume buttons along with a Jawbone button for accessing various smart features including voice dialing and battery status. The right side holds a Power button and button for Bluetooth pairing, plus a 3.5mm output, microUSB port, and a power plug connector.

Pairing a smartphone, tablet, or other Bluetooth device with the Big Jambox is simple. When you first turn on the speaker it will automatically enter pairing mode, and after you've paired it with one device you can pair it with additional devices by holding the pairing button. You can also connect an audio device directly to the Big Jambox through the 3.5mm input with the included cable. The microUSB port is solely for updating the Big Jambox's software, since unlike the Jambox, which charged via USB, it has a dedicated power jack and AC adapter. As a Bluetooth device, the range of the speaker is about 30 feet. According to Jawbone, the Big Jambox can last up to 15 hours on a single charge, much longer than, say, the Bose SoundLink, which is rated to last eight hours at moderate listening levels. I ran all of my tests on the Big Jambox, and after three days it still said the battery is "about full." It actually said that. Pressing the Jambox button summons a female robotic voice that can tell you battery status.

Jawbone Big Jambox

Performance
The Big Jambox sounds clear, and its larger size and more power lets it get much louder than the Jambox. I filled the 5,000-square-foot PC Lab with music by cranking the volume to max, and while my fellow editors preferred "Bye Bye Birdie" to Glenn Benton, most everyone heard both the show tunes and death metal. Vocals and strings sounded crisp but slightly bright, and midrange notes were full and accurate.

Our bass test track, The Knife's "Silent Shout," sounded deep and forceful. The low end sounded slightly crunchy, and other bass-heavy songs like the Beastie Boys' "Shake Your Rump" distorted slightly when the volume was turned up to maximum level. The Big Jambox is still a portable speaker, though, so don't expect driving sound to rock a room. It can deliver music to a small party, but it won't compete with a larger iPod dock or a full sound system.

In my test calls with an Apple iPhone 4S, voice call quality was clear, and the 360-degree microphone and larger size of the Big Jambox make it great for conference calls. Voices are picked up by the speaker easily at normal levels, and callers can be heard very loudly with the volume turned up.?

The Jawbone Big Jambox doesn't quite deliver the power and clarity of our Editors' Choice wireless portable speaker, the Bose SoundLink Wireless Mobile Speaker, and it's three times more expensive than some other wireless options like the Logitech Mini Boombox ($99.99, 4 stars), but it works well as a speakerphone and boasts a long battery life, which is key for a portable speaker. The Beats By Dre Beatbox Portable ($449.95, 3.5 stars) offers stronger audio quality given its larger size, but it requires six D-cell batteries to be portable. If you value flexibility over audiophile-grade sound quality, the Big Jambox should be at the top of your list.

Nokia confirms intent to bring unlocked Pureview 808 handset to US (update)

Nokia's major focal points within the US market may currently be its Lumia 900 and Windows Phone, but that doesn't mean it's planning to leave its other notable offerings outside of Uncle Sam's borders. Speaking with PC Mag, Nokia executive Chris Weber explained that the company aims to offer its current imaging- / Symbian Belle flagship-handset, the 41-megapixel Pureview 808, north of Mexico in the "next couple of months" -- unsurprising, considering it recently passed through the underground testing-chambers of the FCC. Unlike the Lumia, however, this mega-phone will only be sold unlocked, naturally sporting AT&T bands (possibly others, too. See the update below.) for connectivity. While we're still eager to find out more detailed availability information, you can now rest assured that you'll soon be able to capture highly detailed photos of your freedom fries to post on Tumblr.

Update: PC Mag's Sascha Segan wrote in the comments below to clarify this device's likely connectivity options:

Weber said he was sure the phone would support AT&T. He didn't refer specifically to any frequency bands or say the phone wouldn't support any other carrier. I presume it's going to be the international model, so it'll be any carrier the international model supports.
