On paper the LG Optimus HD is a killer. Consider:

Get Organized With These Personal Finance Tips

When trying to build a savings, every bit you put it in can help. Instead of purchasing a cup of coffee every morning, brew your own at home or at work. If you take your own coffee you can save a lot of money. Replace your auto commute with a public transit ride. That could add up to hundreds of dollars a month in savings. These small amounts of money add up quickly, and you can put those funds towards bigger and better things. Enjoying such rewards can be sweeter than any cup of coffee.

Avoid eating out to save money. Making your own meals is cheaper, as well healthier for you.

You?re not alone if you make a mistake or two with your personal finances. If you?ve only ever bounced one check or overdrafted once, ask the bank manager if they will waive the fee. This trick can only be used by someone who has kept positive balances and hasn?t used overdrafts before.

Keeping track of your expenses and income is a key component of getting your personal finances in order. Start your written budget by listing all of your monthly expenses. Include both large and small expenses, because everything adds up. Don?tforget bills that aren?t paid each month. These may include auto insurance, property taxes or propane costs. You can get an approximate monthly payment for these by averaging the previous year?s cost. Add all the expenses up, and then you can calculate how much you have to spend and save each month.

From every check, take out savings first. If you try to save the money after the month has gone by, you will find that you do not have any money left. If you know the money is unavailable, it lessens the chance you will spend it.

An access to savings that are immediately available is important. This savings fund should be an account with a high yield. Online banks often have federally insured savings accounts with a higher interest rate.

When it comes to foreign exchange trading, let profits run in order to be a success. This tactic should be used in moderation without greed getting in the way. Once you are happy with the profit that you have made on a trade, you need to know when it is time to withdraw.

The Internet can be a great way to find discounts and coupons that are not otherwise available. Use these methods for locating coupons to help you get into the habit of saving the most amount of money to put yourself in a better financial situation.

If your entire check is gone after paying the bills, look for non-essential places you can cut down on spending. If you try to cut an enjoyable activity, such as dining out, out of your budget entirely, you?ll probably give up on your budget after just a few months. However, if you just cut back half the dinners out every month, you can save money and still enjoy dining out.

Many products out there have some kind of a warranty on them, and if something should go wrong with the product, it would tend to happen during the period of the warranty. Extended warranties can end up costing you more money in the long run.

If you want financial stability, it?s important to have an established savings account into which you make regular deposits. If you do this, you won?t need a loan in an emergency, and you will be able to handle any crisis that occurs. It doesn?t matter if you save a whole lot each month or just a little; what is important is that there is a contribution each month.

Knowing the value of ones possessions can make all the difference in preventing a person from throwing out or selling an item for next to nothing, when it was really a valuable item. If someone sells a classic piece of furniture for its true value, rather than throwing it out, their personal finances stand to improve.

Always have an idea of what your credit report shows. You have the option to receive a free copy of your credit report, and many ways to keep tabs on it throughout the year for free. Check your credit yourself at least twice in a year so you can ensure that you have not been a victim of identity theft.

There is a chance your credit score may drop when you are working to repair it. Don?t worry too much about this if you have done nothing wrong. Keep on working toward getting good things on your credit score, and your score will improve.

Neglecting your personal finances may cause you a lot of trouble, but with some patience and a little bit of work, you will be able to do it. Take advantage of research and resources, like professional financial consultants. Using the tips listed above will help you to make better financial decisions in the future.

Dennis Mahon Guity And Daniel Mahon Acquitted In White Supremacist Bombing Trial

PHOENIX -- A white supremacist was convicted in a 2004 bombing that injured a black city official in suburban Phoenix, but his identical twin brother was acquitted.

The federal jury Friday stopped short of finding Dennis Mahon guilty of a hate crime.

The 61-year-old twins from Illinois were on trial for six weeks as dramatic testimony came from the bombing victim and a female government informant dubbed a "trailer park Mata Hari" by defense attorneys.

The jury found Dennis Mahon guilty of three charges in the bombing but found Daniel Mahon, also a white supremacist, not guilty of the one charge he faced: conspiracy to damage buildings and property by means of explosives.

The verdict came nearly eight years to the day since the Feb. 26, 2004, bombing that injured Don Logan, who is black and was Scottsdale's diversity director at the time. Logan was hospitalized for three days and needed four surgeries on his hand and arm. The bombing also injured a secretary.

Logan told The Associated Press that the verdict was bittersweet for him.

"It's not illegal to be a racist but it is illegal to act upon that racism, especially when you injure people," he said. "This, to me, is a hallmark case that reached that racial discord, that hate."

During the trial, prosecutors argued that the Mahon brothers bombed Logan on behalf of a group called the White Aryan Resistance, which they say encourages members to act as "lone wolves" and commit violence against non-whites and the government.

They played surveillance tapes of the brothers referring to Logan in racial slurs and a voicemail that Dennis Mahon left at the diversity office just months before the bombing in which he angrily said: "The white Aryan resistance is growing in Scottsdale. There's a few white people who are standing up."

Defense attorneys said that someone working for the city of Scottsdale was a likelier candidate because Logan's job made him unpopular. They also heavily criticized the use of 41-year-old Rebecca Williams as an informant, giving her the "trailer park Mata Hari" nickname ? a reference to the Dutch exotic dancer who was convicted of working as a spy for Germany during World War I.

Investigators recruited the former stripper to act like a government separatist and racist. She wore revealing clothes and sent racy photos to the brothers to win their trust.

Williams met the brothers in January 2005 after investigators set her up in a government-provided trailer at a campground in Catoosa, Okla., where the brothers were staying at the time.

Over the years, the three mostly spoke over the phone, but they got together in person on several occasions. While apart, she sent the brothers several revealing photos of herself, including one of her from behind wearing chaps, a Confederate bikini bottom and a black leather jacket. Another photo showed her in a white bikini top with a grenade hanging between her breasts as she posed in front of a pickup truck and a swastika.

Dennis Mahon opened up to Williams as their conversations were recorded, telling her how to make bombs after she told him a fictitious story that she wanted to harm a child molester she knew.

In one conversation, she asked Mahon if he ever had a bomb work, to which he replied: "Yeah, diversity officer."

He also told her that the bomb used on Logan was a 1-by-5-inch pipe bomb, a fact that investigators never released publicly and that prosecutors said proved that Mahon was guilty because only the bomber could have known it.

Dennis Mahon was found guilty of conspiracy to damage buildings and property by means of explosives; of malicious damage of a building by means of explosives; and distribution of information related to explosives. He faces between seven and 100 years in prison at his May 22 sentencing.

Logan testified, choking up as he recalled the chaos after the bomb went off in his hand and describing how he frantically ran down a hallway before kneeling down, hearing a secretary scream and looking down to see blood dripping on the carpet.

"I heard a pop that sounded like a gunshot and everything slowed down," he said.

On Friday, Logan said that every time he's been in court he tried to make eye contact with the Mahons, but that they never would look at him. But he noticed that they were watching him with intensity when he re-enacted the bombing during testimony.

"It was almost like they were getting off on me sharing that moment when they sent their prized gift and it detonated," he said.

Logan worked personally with the Justice Department to have prosecutors seek a hate-crime finding from jurors, which would have required whatever prison term Mahon gets to be longer. He said that when he speaks to U.S. District Judge David Campbell at the sentencing, he'll ask that Mahon spend the rest of his life behind bars.

"Dennis Mahon is a danger to any community, and to me, he doesn't deserve to be out," Logan said.

CALIFORNIA INVESTOR PLEADS GUILTY TO BID RIGGING AND ...

SACRAMENTO,Calif. ? A real estate investor pleaded guilty today in U.S. District Court in Sacramento to conspiring to rig bids and commit mail fraud at public real estate foreclosure auctions held in San Joaquin County,Calif.,Sharis A. Pozen,Acting Assistant Attorney General of the Department of Justice?s Antitrust Division, and Benjamin B. Wagner,U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California, announced.

Wiley C. Chandler pleaded guilty to conspiring with a group of real estate speculators who agreed to rig bids and commit mail fraud when purchasing selected properties at public real estate foreclosure auctions in San Joaquin County. The goals of the conspiracies were to suppress and restrain competition,to fraudulently obtain selected real estate at noncompetitive prices and to divert money to coconspirators that would have gone to the beneficiaries, the department said in court papers.

According to the court documents, after the conspirators? designated bidder bought a property at a public auction, they would hold a second, private auction,at which each participating conspirator would bid the amount above the public auction price he or she was willing to pay. The conspirator who bid the highest amount at the end of the private auction won the property. The difference between the price at the public auction and that at the second auction was the group?s illicit profit. The illicit profit was divided among the conspirators in payoffs. According to Chandler?s plea agreement, the conspiracies began at least early as September 2008 and continued until at least October 2009.

To date,10 individuals,including Chandler,have pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California in connection with the investigation. They are:Anthony B. Ghio;John R. Vanzetti;Theodore B. Hutz;Richard W. Northcutt;Yama Marifat;Gregory L. Jackson;Walter Daniel Olmstead;Robert Rose;and Kenneth A. Swanger.

Chandler was indicted by a federal grand jury in Sacramento on Dec. 7,2011 with three investors ? Andrew B. Katakis,Donald M. Parker and Anthony B. Joachim ? and one auctioneer,W. Theodore Longley. Trial dates for these individuals have yet to be set.

?The Antitrust Division will continue to cooperate with its law enforcement partners to bring to justice those who undermine the competitive market for foreclosed properties and harm consumers,? said Acting Assistant Attorney General Pozen.

?Public auctions are meant for the public, not for an elite group conspiring together for their own profit,? U.S. Attorney Wagner stated. ?The prosecution of these defendants is necessary to protect the integrity of the housing market.?

Chandler pleaded guilty to bid rigging,a violation of the Sherman Act,which carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $1 million fine. The maximum fine may be increased to twice the gain derived from the crime or twice the loss suffered by the victims of the crime if either of those amounts is greater than the statutory maximum fine. Chandler also pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a $1 million fine.

These charges arose from an ongoing federal antitrust investigation of fraud and bidding irregularities in certain real estate auctions in San Joaquin County. The investigation is being conducted by the Antitrust Division?s San Francisco Field Office, the U.S. Attorney?s Office for the Eastern District of California, the FBI?s Sacramento Division and the San Joaquin County District Attorney?s Office. Trial attorneys Anna Pletcher and Tai Milder from the Antitrust Division?s San Francisco Field Office and Assistant U.S. Attorney Russell L. Carlberg are prosecuting the case.

Today?s charges are part of efforts underway by President Barack Obama?s Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force. President Obama established the interagency Financial Fraud Enforcement Task Force to wage an aggressive, coordinated and proactive effort to investigate and prosecute financial crimes. The task force includes representatives from a broad range of federal agencies, regulatory authorities, inspectors general and state and local law enforcement who, working together, bring to bear a powerful array of criminal and civil enforcement resources. The task force is working to improve efforts across the federal executive branch, and with state and local partners,to investigate and prosecute significant financial crimes, ensure just and effective punishment for those who perpetrate financial crimes, combat discrimination in the lending and financial markets, and recover proceeds for victims of financial crimes. One component of the task force is the national Mortgage Fraud Working Group,co-chaired by U.S. Attorney Wagner. For more information on the task force, visit www.StopFraud.gov.

Anyone with information concerning bid rigging or fraud related to real estate foreclosure auctions should contact the Antitrust Division?s San Francisco Field Office at 415-436-6660,visit www.justice.gov/atr/contact/newcase.htm,contact the U.S. Attorney?s Office for the Eastern District of California at 916-554-2700 or contact the FBI?s Sacramento Division at 916-481-9110.

Obayashi To Build Space Elevator By 2050

Look, ultimately you can't know if a technology is a good idea without actually building the tech, full scale, and spending the time and money to create revised versions to fix the major problems.

After you do that, some technologies are still a dog, no matter how you try to hide it. Nuclear power is an instance of that : sure it works, but the risk of catastrophe overshadows everything, and means that if you try to build and run a reactor everything costs too much because of the dangers. In the long run, nuclear is not feasible because other technologies will keep getting cheaper.

I feel a space elevator is a dog for a similar fundamental reason : there's one 36,000 km high structure.

Any serious failure to a manufacturing defect along 36,000 km of cable, and you lose every last dime invested in the project. (not to mention the falling cable might cause some nasty problems). If someone ever wants to attack a space elevator, it's a perfect terrorism target. One homemade cruise missile (in 2050, I suspect making a cruise missile won't be much harder than RC airplanes are today. Heck, some garage tinkerers already have done similar projects) and the ENTIRE elevator falls.

Not to mention laser fire, railgun fire, bad weather, etc etc. There's a lot of things and it only has to fail at one point.

Furthermore, you have to complete the elevator project before it is worth anything. Invest all that money to FINISH the cable, you can't get incremental results. And this multi-billion dollar structure (realistically probably hundreds of billions) has a rather limited cargo capacity : one load of passengers a week is NOT a rapid movement to space.

So, no. It's an idea that has somehow gained traction, but it is most likely a non-starter.

I propose a much simpler idea : rather than use lasers on the ground to transmit power to the elevator climber car, scale up those laser arrays a few orders of magnitude to the point that they can vaporize propellant off the bottom of the spacecraft. Pulse the beams right, and planar shockwaves will be created, giving net thrust without any kind of nozzle.

Advantages :
? ? 1. Ablative Laser propulsion doesn't require anything in the spacecraft in the way of aerospace hardware but a small instrument package to report attitude and accelerations back to the ground. Gyroscopes for stabilization would be nice, but not essential.
2. If a laser module on the ground fails or wears out, the launch continues..10 or 50% redundancy is entirely feasible.
3. You can do one launch every few minutes, assuming you use LED diode pumped fiber optic lasers, and have sufficient cooling capacity to remove the waste heat and sufficient power generation. That could be a metric ton or so to orbit every 15 minutes, 24/7, 7 days a week.
4. You do 1000 or 10,000 unmanned cargo launches before you send the first man up in a spacecraft identical to the one used for cargo (well, with life support inside, but identical flight hardware). This kind of sampling size allows you to honestly evaluate the safety of the system. In the event of a problem, you turn the beam off instantly and deploy parachutes. (such as beam heating of the side walls or something). No rocket to explode.
5. Each spacecraft will be extremely cheap, just a block of an inert solid bolted to the bottom, and a small instrument package (an iphone has all the circuitry needed, although of course you would use more sensitive accelerometers) and a radio. Obviously, some kind of orbital maneuvering system is also needed, but you can get to orbit without it.

Disadvantages :

1. Reflected beams from the lasers might cause problems for observers on the ground. Might have to create a large exclusion zone around the launch site, with air travel forbidden in a large radius. Not a big deal, tons of places in the Arizona desert. Still, with so many people involved, it seems likely a few people would be blinded if the lasers used were visible light.
2. It would require tens of thousands of dollars of electric power for every launch. Meaning, a ticket to space would still cost tens of thousands of dollars just to launch the capsule + life support for yourself, plus supply capsules. Even though this technology would make it orders of magnitude cheaper than anything we have now, it would still be too expensive for a member of the middle class to routinely go to space.
3. If the laser array fails or has to be shut down RIGHT after lift off, the capsule will be moving too slowly for parachutes to work, and so it would plummet to the ground and kill passengers. One proposal is to use a simple steam catapault to launch the capsule vertically at a high enough velocity that parachutes can be used. Then, if anything goes wrong, you turn off the lasers and deploy chutes.
4. A cost effective system won't launch more than 1000 or so kilograms of payload per launch. You get the volume by doing many launches. This means that astronauts have to be launched one at a time in separate spacecraft that rendevouz in orbit. Large satellites have to be sent as several separate modules. In a few cases, this could pose a problem that cannot be easily solved, for instance spy satellites need a single mirror that may weigh more than 1000 kg alone.

With that said, the cost estimates I have seen say that for a mere 200 billion or so, at current prices, enough lasers could be bought to launch a space-shuttle load every launch.

Anyways, space elevators aren't ever going to be built, if a superior alternative like this is feasible.

Science Fiction is Bigger Than You Think! ? Grasping for the Wind

In doing research for my Amazing Stories Project business plan, I was pleasantly surprised to find that one of the theories I am basing the plan on has been proven to be largely correct.

What is that theory?? In grandiose terms, it is the concept that science fiction has been used as a vehicle to introduce and gain acceptance for virtually every form of media currently known to mankind ? and will no doubt be used in a similar manner to introduce and gain acceptance for any new forms that may be coming in the future.

How this is important to the business plan can?t be easily summarized, so you will have to be content with this less than perfect description:? Science fiction is directly responsible for generating billions of dollars of sales in our economy and indirectly responsible for generating HUNDREDS of billions more.

But you all don?t come here for dry business subjects nor the dirty art of convincing people with money to give you some so you can make them even more, so I?ll dispense with that and return to the main theory.

We can?t know what the environment was way back when Lucien was penning his tale, nor what was going on around the campfire when the ?Tale of Gilgamesh? was being recounted, but considering that both works have survived for thousands of years, it?s a pretty good bet that they made a large impression.? It might not be too far off the mark to suppose that both tales ? considered at a minimum to be progenitors of the scientifiction story ? were useful in getting the idea of storytelling to catch on.

Jump forward a few hundred years and we find Gutenberg staining his fingers with ink.? It is interesting to note that ? despite the contemporary expense of printing at the time, numerous precursor works of science fiction were published ? Cyrano?s adventures among them.

Move forward another half-millennia and we arrive at the era of the mass-market magazine, a concept that originated in France and Britain in the late 1800s, where we find titles like the All Story and Munseys ? featuring tall tales of a proto-SF variety.? Less than 30 years later, Amazing Stories would arrive on the scene and largely give rise not only to science fiction but the success of the genre fiction magazine.

But ? a short decade before we find moving pictures arriving on the scene and what do we find?? George Melies?s A Trip To The Moon, closely followed by other short features featuring ? science fiction concepts.? In fact, a few years following Melies?s experiment with special effects and fantastic story lines, we find Metropolis, perhaps the most revered epic silent film of all time.

Moving on through the years we arrive at the introduction of comic books and comic strips:? Superman and Flash Gordon are still with us and going strong.

Broadcast radio comes into play and what do we hear presented as some of the first regularly scheduled dramas?? Science Fiction, fantasy and horror based radio plays, Flash Gordon still there plugging along, accompanied by other familiar names like The Shadow, Thriller, not to mention the most epic radio play of all time ? Welles? presentation of War of the Worlds.

A few years later and television comes onto the scene.? How did the broadcasters decide to hook kids on this new medium?? Captain Video, that?s how.

Role Playing Games are introduced by ? Dungeons & Dragons.? Massive Multi-player games of our era are largely given success through the introduction of World of Warcraft.

Video games enter the picture and, once we move beyond pong, what do we see?? SF & fantasy title after SF & Fantasy title.

Finally, the internet era.? Who created the internet & the web?? SF geeks, that?s who.? What was the world?s first email list server devoted to?? The SFLovers mailing list out of Rutgers University.? Who was one of the first, if not the first bloggers?? One of our own ? Jerry Pournelle.

Of course one could easily say that making a connection here is largely the result of circumstance, and you might be correct in some regards, but I see a different picture.? I see a situation in which time and time again, those who were looking for appropriate fare for their new media introduction turned to the only place they could reasonably go ? the fantastic, stories and iconography that embodied the concepts of new, the future, the whiz-bang:? it seems to be a natural pairing, combining stories about the future and the fantastical with new forms of entertainment.? (What films did they roll 3D out for?)

One has to begin to wonder how well the ?new? media would have caught on if other subjects had been used to introduce them.? Would TV be the medium it is today if they?d started with Julia Child cooking shows?? Something tells me they wouldn?t have captured the children?s audience with that?.

The big question however, (the same question asked in my business plan) is this:? what would happen if the genre itself were to receive the kind of recognition and respect it deserves if it was, in fact, largely responsible for helping to introduce these media and, perhaps more importantly:? what if, knowing this history, we consciously enlist it to aid in the introduction of something new?

About MVOX AG MVOX AG offers wireless broadband internet access services with over 15 years of experience as a system integrator, as well as being the most successful WiMAX operator in Germany. The company is based in Garching a.d. Alz, Germany. VoIP, or Voice Over Internet Protocol, is a service that uses the Internet to deliver voice communications. VoIP service is used as an alternative to traditional, line-based phone plans. Calls placed over the Internet are sent digitally, as data, and they are received by computers. This reduced the need for hardware and resulted in lower costs. One of the most significant benefits of VoIP technology is the low cost. In situations where broadband Internet is used for voice calls, the costs are typically dramatically lower than standard phone service. In fact, many VoIP services such as Skype and iCall cost nothing, as long as calls are made from one computer to another. When VoIP is used for calls to traditional phone lines, the cost remains low. Because the voice data is routed over existing Internet connections, the older phone infrastructure is bypassed. This method creates savings for the phone provider, who can pass on a lower price to the consumer. Understanding Breast Cancer Responsiveness

Dr. Karen Gelmon (biography and disclosures)

What I did before

When I started treating breast cancer, systemic therapy recommendations were usually based only on the menopausal status of the woman and whether there was cancer in the axillary nodes.? Although estrogen status was being measured the importance of this marker was not appreciated.

What changed my practice

In the last decade there has been an explosion of information about the genetics and molecular makeup of breast cancers with a heightened understanding that breast cancer is not one disease. A landmark publication in 2000 described four types of breast cancer. 1 In a recent as yet unpublished study using newer sequencing technology, researchers at the BC Cancer Agency and collaborators from the UK have suggested 9 distinctive types of the disease. 2 ?The recognition of these subtypes of breast cancer is changing how we approach and treat the disease.

The risk of recurrence is a major concern when an early breast cancer is diagnosed as even with excellent surgery there is a risk of both local and systemic recurrence.? Architectural factors such as the size of the tumour and nodal involvement have classically been used to determine risk. Biological features such as estrogen receptor status, HER2 expression and grade, often measured by Ki67, are now being included in our risk assessment.

The responsiveness of the tumour has also become an important determinant in how we treat the disease.? Responsiveness describes how the tumour will be affected by specific treatments.?? For example, estrogen receptor status determines whether a breast cancer will respond to endocrine therapy; the gene HER2 is associated with response to anti HER2 therapy such as trastuzumab (Herceptin); and high KI67 tumours may be more responsive to chemotherapy than those with a lower grade or KI67.? Thus two similar sized tumours may get different treatment recommendations based on their biology.

What I do now

For patients with low grade estrogen receptor positive tumours I am recommending much less chemotherapy even if there is nodal involvement and/or the woman is premenopausal.? In these tumours, endocrine therapy may be the most effective treatment and chemotherapy may minimally impact survival.? Having said that, some patients still benefit from including chemotherapy in addition to hormone therapy.? For patients with HER2 overexpressing tumours I often recommend chemotherapy and trastuzumab even if the tumour is small with no involved nodes.? Understanding the biology of breast cancers is providing more personalized recommendations and this is translating into better outcomes.

As we further define subtypes, more targeted treatments will be developed but at this time for many cancers we continue to give broad cytotoxic therapy.? As well, new agents are being developed and may be further decrease recurrences. We are also now frequently rebiopsying recurrent cancers to further understand the markers of response and resistance and to tailor treatment. We also need to study the ?host? patient, as the pharmacogenomics of the individual may affect how the drug is metabolized and also may contribute to the effectiveness and the toxicity of the therapy.

How does this affect family physicians?? Treatment recommendations may be more complicated so counseling patients prior to their oncological consultation may be more confusing.? It may be more difficult to know whether chemotherapy will be recommended or not especially if we begin to do more complex assessments of tumours in specialized laboratories. Numerous studies are reported in the lay and academic press and are never substantiated.? Understanding what is of relevance to the care and management of our patients and which data is transient is difficult.? We need to ensure that the government prioritizes an upgrade of our electronic BC Cancer Agency website and electronic record to make it accessible to primary health care providers with the appropriate, evidence based results.

Biological information is often available as soon as the core biopsy diagnoses an invasive cancer.? Early referral to centres with multidisciplinary teams may avoid long delays and confusing information for both the patient and the primary care providers.? Electronic integrated systems may also aid the transfer of information. Frequent updates at family practice meetings and in journals can also provide current treatment and care models to a wider audience.? With this knowledge, family practices can provide a broad idea of the concept of adjuvant therapy for the treatment of early breast cancer and introduce the idea of chemotherapy, hormones and radiation without specifying the details.? Family doctors should be aware of the new patient package, including a patient book that is available through the Alliance for Breast Cancer Information at the BC Cancer Agency. 3 Reassuring patients about the improvements in survival as over 90% of early breast cancer cases in BC now live over 5 years will also help provide helpful information to decrease a woman?s anxiety. 4

Gig reports: The Word House / We Are Poets and Grand Verse ...

I comp?red two seemingly disparate but equally delightful gigs this week.

On Wednesday it was a privilege to host the after-screening party for a preview of We Are Poets at Curzon Cinema Soho. If you haven?t seen it, We Are Poets is a documentary about five Leeds Young Authors? poets writing and working to go to Brave New Voices, the biggest slam in the USA. I love the film; not just because it relates to my artform and because I?m lucky enough to work with young people now and then, but because it?s an inspiring story and a beautifully-made piece of work. The Word House put on the live spoken word element of the evening, and we packed out the Curzon bar for some passionate, political and powerful performances from the poets.

Emma Jones opened the show with her trademark impersonations and well-observed humour; Anthony Anaxagorou brought a fierce but controlled intensity to proceedings; Dean Atta captured the mood of the moment with his well-constructed set. The open mic was a mixture of established names and newcomers who all went down well with a warm Word House crowd, but the real treat was the presence of Kadish Morris and Saju Ahmed. These two poets were part of the Leeds Young Authors cohort that featured in We Are Poets, and their poems demonstrated why they were the subject of the film.

Huge thanks to the makers of We Are Poets for the gig, the Curzon Cinema Soho for hosting an excitingly cross-artform event and of course all the people who saw the film and stayed for the Word House. The next Word House is in April ? like us on Facebook for more!

On Thursday I was in Margate for Grand Verse Quarto. Game Expo East Kent (GEEK) included a performing arts fringe, and I decided that an evening of videogame inspired poetry was in order. Apples and Snakes and the Tom Thumb Theatre thought so too, so Ross Sutherland, Jacob Sam-La Rose, Christian Watson and I formed a quartet to bring some spoken word to the gamers.

GEEK itself was great fun as I got to have a go on retro versions of Street Fighter and lose to far-too-quick teenagers on Halo 2. The best bit though was listening to a panel discussion featuring indie game developers. It turns out that some of the things that affect poets, writers ? and, I suspect, anyone working as an artistic practitioner ? similarly trouble games makers. Topics raised that struck a chord with me included issues surrounding sourcing funding and making a living from the medium you love; the difficulties and challenges of competition; and a classic one: spending time on promotion and marketing when you want to be making.

After the discussion and Q&A I had a chat to the developers and asked them along to Grand Verse Quarto ? and they all turned up, forming part of an intimate audience for the gig. ?In many ways a lighthearted look at gaming culture, the gig also featured some thought-provoking and poignant pieces about videogames. Like poetry, gaming is a similarly oft-maligned artistic / entertainment medium. Videogames have a similar problem to that of poetry: one of image. Some people have preconceived ideas of what these mediums are and reject them out of hand: poetry is inaccessible and elitist; videogames are pointless and childish. More exposure to positive, high quality and diverse forms of these broad art / entertainment forms is the way forward I think!

Byron Atkinson-Jones, who runs indie game developer?Xiotex Studios, took some brilliant photos of the event, which can be found below. He also left some lovely feedback about the gig:

?I had always thought that such things were the domain of stuffy intellectual types but I had an amazing time and am now craving more. The skill behind the words and the delivery with emotion was stunning.?

So, both of these gigs this week did one of the things that motivates me as a poetry practitioner and project event organiser type: exposing new audiences to high quality spoken word, demonstrating the strength and flexibility of the medium. Two very different evenings, many interesting parallels, one wonderful artform that unites them.

GoodRx Grabs $1M+ From SV Angel, Founders Fund & More To Help You Find Cheap Prescription Drugs

iphone iconLike many other services, goods, and commodities, prescription drug prices can vary widely depending on location and what particular vendor is offering them. Launching last September at the Health 2.0 Conference in San Francisco was GoodRx, a service that's aiming to bring some transparency back to prescription drug purchases by bringing some sophisticated price comparison technology to the everyday consumer. GoodRx was co-founded by Scott Marlette and Doug Hirsch, both early employees of Facebook. Hirsch was VP of Product at Facebook back in 2005, and Marlette, one of the company's first 20 employees, was an engineer who worked on, among other things, Facebook's photo application. The culture of transparency, openness, and focus on the big picture, Marlette says, had a lasting influence on him after Facebook, leading he and Hirsch to apply some of that psychology to building a better way to serve consumers with the latest pricing info from the prescription drug market.
